Cameroon finished third at the AfroBasket 2021 beating Senegal 53:49. Trailing 12-19 at the end of the first period, Senegal slowly took control of the game in the rest of the game. They posted a 10-8 run in the second frame and added a 14-11 rally in the third quarter. The last stanza was decisive in the game as the hosts of the tournament needed a 17-11 rally to seal the win. Marguerite Effa (190-F-97, college: Nevada) scored 15 points to pace the hosts. Tia Weledji (178-G/F-96, college: Princeton) added 13 points in the victory. Bintou Dieme-Marizy (164-PG-84) answered with 12 points for Senegal.

Nigeria - Mali 70-59

Nigeria earned the third consecutive AfroBasket title. They toppled Mali in the championship in Yaounde tonight to claim the trophy. Victoria Macaulay (193-F/C-90, college: Temple) finished with 15 points to lead the charge.
Nigeria got to a quick start. They dropped 22 points in the first period to take an 11-point lead. Mali narrowed the gap in the second frame. They pulled within 7 points at the big break 24-31. Nigeria picked up the tempo in the third term. They unloaded 28 points in the period to record a comfortable 21-point lead at the final break. Mali put together a fierce rally in the fourth term but could not recover as Nigeria marched to the trophy. Ify Ibekwe (187-PF-89, college: Arizona) notched 13 points and 10 rebounds for the champions. Mariam Coulibaly (192-C-97) answered with 13 points for Mali. Sika Kone (190-F/C-02) had 12 points and 11 rebounds in the defeat.

Nigeria marched on into the AfroBasket Final after they saw off Senegal on Friday. Amy Okonkwo (188-F-96, college: TCU) scored 16 to lead the defending champions. Nigeria will now face Mali for the trophy.
Nigeria set the tone early in the game. They recorded a 22-11 lead after ten minutes. Nigeria poured in 23 points in the second term to ensure a comfortable 45-31 halftime advantage. They held Senegal to just 13 points in the third term to open a 16-point lead. Senegal narrowed the gap in the fourth period but just sweetened the pill at the end. Ify Ibekwe (187-PF-89, college: Arizona) produced 14 points for the winners. Mame-Marie Sy-Diop (185-F-85) answered with 18 points for Senegal. Yacine Diop (178-G/F-95, college: Louisville) produced 14 points in the loss.

The defending champions enter the Semifinals at the AfroBasket 2021. Nigeria overcame Cote d'Ivoire 72:56 to become the first team to reach semis. Nigeria grabbed a 24-8 surge at the start and never looked behind. They added a 19-13 rally in the second frame and won the third period 16-14. Cote d'Ivoire managed to reply with a 21-13 run in the last stanza to reduce the gap at the end. Ezinne Kalu (173-G-92, college: SSU) stepped up with 17 points and Amy Okonkwo (188-F-96, college: TCU) added 14. Victoria Macaulay (193-F/C-90, college: Temple) produced 13, whilst Promise Amukamara (173-G-93, college: Arizona St.) scored 11. Salimata Berte (182-F-89) replied with 13 points in a loss and Djefarima Diawara (180-F-94) had 9.

Senegal - Mozambique 74-46
Senegal reaches Semifinals of the AfroBasket 2021. They overcame Mozambique 74-46 as they dominated the whole game. Senegal took a 20-13 lead at the start following a 17-9 rally in the second period. Moreover they did not slow down in the rest of the game and posted two more victories. Mame-Marie Sy-Diop (185-F-85) stepped up with 17 points and Bintou Dieme-Marizy (164-PG-84) added 10. Oumoul Sarr (185-F/C-84), Couna Ndao and Yacine Diop (178-G/F-95, college: Louisville) ended up with 8 points each in a win. Anabela Cossa (172-G-86) scored 10 in a loss and Vilma Covane (190-C-96) netted 9.

Cameroon - Egypt 67-61
Cameroon fired past Egypt in the quarterfinal battle in Yaounde. Marguerite Effa (190-F-97, college: Nevada) scored 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to pace the hosts. Egypt sank 25 points in the first period to take a 5-point lead. Cameroon however went on a 19-7 run in the second frame to take a 7-point halftime lead. Egypt pulled within four points at the final break. Cameroon regained control in the fourth term. They limited Egypt to just 15 points in the final period and rallied to the win. Duicy Fankam had 16 points and 18 rebounds for the home side. Raneem Elgedawy (193-F-97, college: WKU) responded with 19 points and 16 rebounds, while Soraia Mohamed (172-G-95) added 16 points in the loss.

Mali - Angola 74-53
Mali outscored Angola to secure the semifinal berth. Sika Kone (190-F/C-02) and Djeneba N'Diaye (165-PG-97) scored 14 points each to lead the winners. Mali recorded a 46-21 halftime lead. They followed with an 18-9 run in the third term to clear off for good. Mariam Coulibaly (192-C-97) produced 11 points and 14 rebounds in the victory. Cristina Matiquite (191-C-92) responded with 15 points for Angola. Avelina Peso (184-F/C-98) had 11 points and 13 rebounds in the defeat.



Rwanda to host 2023 FIBA Women Afrobasket tourney - Sep 24, 2021
Rwanda will host the FIBA Women's Afrobasket 2023, Times Sport has learned. After successfully hosting the Afrobasket men's 2021 championship between August 24 to September 5 and the African Volleyball Championships that unfolded this month, Rwanda is slated to host more sporting competitions in the future. According to a source - who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity, the 2023 Women's Afrobasket is also set to take place in Rwanda, 'FIBA has agreed that Rwanda will host the FIBA Women's Afrobasket in 2023 but will issue an official announcement after the current Women's Afrobasket 2021 takes place in Cameroon,' said the source. Times Sport understands that the President of the Rwanda Basketball Federation, Desire Mugwiza has traveled to Cameroon to watch the ongoing FIBA Women's Afrobasket tournament where he will meet with FIBA Africa officials and after the tournament, FIBA will announce the dates of the 2023 tourney. Rwanda also hosted the inaugural season of the Basketball African League in May this year.

Mali pip Cameroon 52-51 in a thriller of the AfroBasket 2021. Mali played in their third Semi-Final in a row in the continental event and reached the Final this time.
Cameroon opened the game with a 19-12 run and led 3 points at the halftime. Mali replied with an 18-12 run in the third quarter. No matter how hard the hosts tried to recover, they could not win the game. Cameroon got within a single point late in regulation but Mali hung on to escape with a narrow win. Djeneba N'Diaye (165-PG-97) scored 12 points, while Kadidia Maiga (185-PF-97) notched 11 points in the win. Dulcy Fankam (193-F-99) answered with 12 points and 12 rebounds for Cameroon.

Egypt, Angola, Ivory Coast and Mozambique reach quarterfinal stage in Yaounde - Sep 23, 2021
Egypt - Tunisia 85-36
Egypt knocked down Tunisia to advance into the quarterfinal stage in Yaounde. Egypt dominated from start to finish. They established a comfortable 37-23 halftime lead. Egypt followed with a strong 26-8 run in the third term to clear off for good. Nadine Soliman (178-G-98, college: UNCG) accounted for 20 points, while Hagar Amer (184-F-93) added 12 points and 16 rebounds for the winners. Wafa Loubiri (174-G/F-95) responded with 11 points for Tunisia.

Angola - Cape Verde 82-65
Italee Lucas (172-SG-89, college: UNC) scored 17 points and dished out 7 assists to lead Angola past Cape Verde in the African Championship playoff round. Rosa Gala (177-G-95) contributed 16 points for Angola as they paved their way into the quarterfinal stage. Angola used a 28-7 run in the first period to clear off. They dropped 38 points in the second half to race to the victory. Jade Leitao (180-F/C-86, college: Fordham) responded with 20 points for Cape Verde.

Ivory Coast - Guinea 81-50
Ivory Coast held off Guinea to secure the quarterfinal berth. Djefarima Diawara (180-F-94) stepped up with 23 points and 6 rebounds to lead the charge. Ivory Coast jumped off to a 20-10 lead ten minutes into the game. They added 22 points in the second period to open a 17-point halftime advantage. Ivory Coast finished the game on a 22-10 run to seal the win. Laetitia Sahie (188-SF-00) had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Fatou Jallow (170-G-97) answered with 12 points for Guinea.

Kenya - Mozambique 50-72
Mozambique rallied past Kenya and advanced into the quarterfinal stage. Ingvild Mucauro (176-F-92) posted 21 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds in the victory. Mozambique claimed a 24-12 lead after ten minutes. They went on a 17-11 run in the second term to take a 41-23 halftime lead. Mozambique held their opponents to just 10 points in the third period to take a decisive lead. Odelia Mafanela (181-F-89) had 12 points in the win. Melissa Otieno (176-F-92) answered with 10 points for Kenya.

Ivory Coast - Mali 63-76
Mali have won Group D at the AfroBasket 2021. They edged Cote d'Ivoire 76-63 for a 2-0 record, while Cote d'Ivoire finished with 1-1 record. Mali grabbed a 24-20 lead at the start, while the opponents replied with a 17-12 rally to take a 37-36 halftime advantage. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire added a 17-15 rally in the third period to enter the last stanza with a 3-point advantage. Mali meanwhile exploded with a massive 25-9 surge to seal the win. Djeneba N'Diaye (165-PG-97) top-scored for the winners with 23 points and Mariam Coulibaly (192-C-97) poured in 14. Laetitia Sahie (188-SF-00) replied with 24 in a loss and Djefarima Diawara (180-F-94) scored 15.

Egypt - Senegal 63-78
Senegal top Egypt to conquer Group C at the AfroBasket 2021. They improved to a 2-0 record after a 78-63 win. Senegal opened the game with a 21-5 run and added an 18-10 rally in the second frame. In the second half Egypt played better and posted 19 points in each of the quarters. Senegal replied with 21 in the last stanza for the final success. Yacine Diop (178-G/F-95, college: Louisville) and Lena Niang (188-F-96) stepped up with 19 points each for the winners. Oumoul Sarr (185-F/C-84) netted 12, whilst Madjiguene Sene (197-C-94) scored 8. Soraya Degheidy netted 16 in a loss and Nadine Soliman (178-G-98, college: UNCG) as well as Raneem Elgedawy (193-F-97, college: WKU) brought 14 each.

Cape Verde - Cameroon 40-71
Cameroon finished Group Stage on top of Pool A. They rallied past Cape Verde to secure the quarterfinal berth. Merveille Nkoyock (174-SG-01) scored 17 points to lead the winners. Cape Verde recorded a 19-15 lead after ten minutes. Cameroon however limited their opponents to just 21 points in the next three quarters and rallied to the win. Tia Weledji (178-G/F-96, college: Princeton) delivered 13 points in the victory. Joseana Vaz (183-G/F-00) answered with 12 points for Cape Verde.

Angola - Nigeria 65-85
Nigeria clinched the top position in Group B. They overcame Angola to secure the quarterfinal berth. Ezinne Kalu (173-G-92, college: SSU) produced 12 points to lead the charge. Nigeria recorded a 31-18 lead after ten minutes. They followed with a 21-10 run in the second term to take a massive 52-28 halftime lead. Angola slowed their opponents down in the second half but could not rescue the game as Nigeria rallied to the second straight victory. Adaora Elonu (185-PF-90, college: Texas A&M), Amy Okonkwo (188-F-96, college: TCU), Promise Amukamara (173-G-93, college: Arizona St.) and Oderah Chidom (193-F/C-95, college: Duke) had 10 points each for Nigeria. Italee Lucas (172-SG-89, college: UNC) responded with 19 points for Angola.



Review of Day 2 in Cameroon - Sep 19, 2021
Guinea - Egypt 58-102
Egypt secured their win in their opening match on this tournament. They crushed team Guinea and this is their second loss in the same amount of games. Egypt won every quarter of this game, but the biggest difference was in the third part of the game which the Egyptian side won with 9:33. Seven players in Egypt had double-digit points alongside their name, but the best was Soraia Mohamed (172-G-95) with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists for a total index of 23. She was followed by Nadine Soliman (178-G-98, college: UNCG) who combined 20 points and 7 rebounds for a total index of 21. Aicha Mara (177-G/F-96) scored 21 points for losing the side of Guinea.

Tunisia - Ivory Coast 49-69
Ivory Coast managed to win against Tunisia with 20 point margin, they won three out of four quarters in this game, while in the second quarter they started to create a difference that was not reachable to Tunisia. Ivory Coast won that quarter 13:22 and then continued with the same manner in the third quarter as they won it with a 9:18 result. Salimata Berte (182-F-89) scored 20 points, but the MVP of this game was Kany Kouyate (178-G/F-90) with 9 points and 17 rebounds for 23 index points. Wafa Loubiri (174-G/F-95) scored 17 points for Tunisia.

Mozambique - Angola 61-70
Angola won a tough game against Mozambique with 9 point difference. First-quarter Angola started strong with a 14:25 win, which was enough difference to keep the game under control. Mozambique was better in rebounding (40-39) but that was not enough at the end of the day. The best in Angola was Avelina Peso (184-F/C-98) with 17 points + 9 rebounds + 2 assists, while on the losing side Ingvild Mucauro (176-F-92) 16 points.

Kenya - Cape Verde 61-58
Kenya wins in a thriller game and is the most exciting game so far in this African Championship tournament. Amazing comeback in the last ten minutes of the game with a win of 18:12 and a total win of 61:58 for the Kenyan side. Kenya won 3 out of 4 quarters in this game, but Cape Verde win in the second quarter with 12:21 was key that we have a one-possession game tonight. In the end, Kenya is going with heads held high and they are now on 1-1. Cape Verde will try to find the first victory against Cameroon. Joseana Vaz (183-G/F-00) scored 18 points for Cape Verde, she also had 12 rebounds for a double-double performance. She was far away 3 assists to a triple-double game. In the winning team, Victoria Reynolds (178-F-97) scored 17 points, while adding 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

Amazing game for Mali National Team in the opening of African Championship in Cameroon. They crushed Tunisia with 101-39 and dominated the game from beginning to end. Djeneba N'Diaye (165-PG-97) with 18 points, 5 assists and 6 steals was best in Mali, while Wafa Loubiri (174-G/F-95) scored 16 out of 39 total points for Tunisia tonight.

Cameroon - Kenya 74-50
Host of this Championship record their first win, they overcome the team of Kenya with +24 point margin. In the losing team, two players scored 12 points each Natalie Mwangale (165-PG-93) and Mercy Wanyama (185-C-92), while in-home and winning team, Marina Ewodo (188-F-98, college: UC Riverside) scored 16, while grabbing 7 rebounds for a total index of 20. When she was on the court, Cameroon had a +28 point advantage. Amazing game for Marina.

Nigeria - Mozambique 67-50
In the closest game of the day, Nigeria was better than team Mozambique with a +17 point difference.
