Nigeria retain AfroBasket title in Dakar - Aug 18, 2019

FINALNigeria - Senegal 60-55 Nigeria defended their AfroBasket title. They upset Senegal in Dakar to lift the trophy. Evelyn Akhator (190-F-95, college: Kentucky) produced 14 points and 9 rebounds in the victory. Nigeria recorded a 32:24 halftime lead. They extended the margin at 11-point mark at the final intermission. Senegal limited Nigeria to just 12 points in the fourth term but could not avoid the loss. Ezinne Kalu (173-G-92, college: SSU) provided 13 points for Nigeria. Astou Traore (182-F/C-81) replied with 13 points for Senegal.
3-4 PlaceMali - Mozambique 66-54 Mali clinched the Bronze medals in Dakar. They beat Mozambique to step onto the pedestal. Meiya Tirera (186-F/C-86) posted 21 points to lead the winners. Mali recorded a 19:8 lead after ten minutes. They went on a 33:29 second half run to seal the victory. Kadidia Maiga (175-G/F-97) and Touty Gandega (170-G-91) added 12 points each for Mali. Leia Dongue (185-F/C-91) replied with 22 points for Mozambique.
5-6 PlaceAngola - DR Congo 68-48 Angola beat DR Congo to claim the fifth position at the championship. Angola posted a 17:12 lead after ten minutes. But DR Congo used a 12:4 run in the second term to take a 3-point halftime lead. Angola though replied with a 47:24 run in the second half to race to the win. Italee Lucas (175-SG-89, college: UNC) provided 18 points, while Rosemira Daniel (172-G/F-93) had 16 points in the win. Pauline Akonga Nsimbo (188-C-82, agency: LBM Management) replied with 9 points for DR Congo.
7-8 PlaceEgypt - Ivory Coast 62-58 Egypt beat Ivory Coast to finish the tournament on a high note. Menatalla Awad (179-G-91) recorded 14 points as Egypt clinched the seventh position. Egypt posted a 25:13 lead after ten minutes. They held Ivory Coast to just 26 points in the second half and rolled to the win. Raneem Elgewady had 13 points in the victory. Adjoua Kouakou (184-F/C-93) replied with 9 points for Ivory Coast.

SEMISNigeria - Mali 79-58 Nigeria will play in the title game in Senegal. They cruised past Mali in the semifinal tonight. Nigeria accumulated a 42:28 halftime lead. They kept Mali at bay throughout the second half and eased to the victory. Ezinne Kalu (173-G-92, college: SSU) provided 19 points, while Adaora Elonu (185-PF-90, college: Texas A&M) added 13 points and 8 rebounds for Nigeria. Meiya Tirera (186-F/C-86) answered with 14 points for Mali.
Senegal - Mozambique 60-57 Senegal held off Mozambique in a tough battle to enter the championship game at the AfroBasket. The hosts got to a sloppy start. Mozambique got to a 35:19 halftime lead. But Senegal came back to life in the second half. The hosts used a massive 22:9 run in the third term to pull within 3 points at the final break. They went on a 19:13 run in the fourth quarter to snatch the victory. Astou Traore (182-F/C-81) delivered 16 points and 9 rebounds, while Bintou Dieme-Marizy (164-PG-84) added 10 points for the home side. Mali - Ivory Coast 60-51 Mali outgunned Ivory Coast to reach Final Four in Senegal. Mali accumulated a 29:22 halftime lead. Ivory Coast pulled within 2 points at the final intermission. But Mali used an 18:11 run in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Touty Gandega (170-G-91) had 15 points, while Meiya Tirera (186-F/C-86) added 14 points fro the winners. Kany Kouyate (178-G/F-90) replied with 15 points for Ivory Coast.

They followed with a massive 23:9 run in the third term to clear off for good. Ezinne Kalu (173-G-92, college: SSU) recorded 17 points, while Victoria Macaulay (193-F/C-90, college: Temple) added 14 points for Nigeria. Mozambique - Egypt 80-66 Mozambique beat Egypt to pave their way into the semifinal stage. Mozambique claimed a 26:9 lead ten minutes into the game. Egypt pulled within 9 points at the big break. But Mozambique sank 43 points in the second half and raced to the victory.
