Maiga bringing positive energy for Mali from the sidelines - Oct 1, 2015

(AfroBasket Women 2015) - It's been eight years since Mali last won an AfroBasket Women title, but they are in Cameroon capital city of Yaounde competing at AfroBasket Women 2015 aiming at returning to their glory days.

Former WNBA star Hamchetou Maiga, who propelled Mali to their first-ever continental title at AfroBasket Women in 2007, is in Yaounde encouraging her fellow Malians in the battle for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

"I am helping the team from the sidelines the best way that I can," the 37-year-old former shooting guard told FIBA.com.

Mali advanced to Thursday's Quarter-Finals and will take on Senegal, a team that they defeated in the Final back in 2007 in Senegal's capital city of Dakar.

Maiga, who retired from international basketball four years ago after Mali finished third at AfroBasket 2011 played in the Malian capital of Bamako, feels Amara Traore's team has what it takes to go all the way to final in Yaounde.

We know the challenge of making it to the Olympics, but we are up for it, but we are looking at one game at a time," she noted.

"Everybody is playing for the same goal. It's going to be really tough."

Mali have shown competitiveness despite a 44-43 defeat to tournament hosts Cameroon in the Group Phase.

Maiga, who is serving as assistant to coach Traore, represented Mali at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and the experience was so valuable for her, that she would do anything in her power to help the team reach the Rio Games.

"I would like to believe that my skills could help this Mali team making in it to Rio de Janeiro. - Maiga

Whatever the results in Yaounde, Maiga feels that Mali basketball should be proud with their recent achievements.

"Mali basketball has improved a lot, especially at the youth level," she pointed out.

"They have been winning all the African Championships for the past couple of years and that's credit to the Federation for the camps that they do for the kids of Mali.

"That's the starting point, getting kids to play basketball. I would like to believe that we continue working this way," she concluded.

As for her basketball future, Maiga remains as passionate as when she began her basketball career in Bamako.

"Basketball has been part of my life. That's something that I enjoy doing, and I would have loved to be playing here, but I believe I wasn't meant to be playing this time. I am here to help the girls."

Just like Maiga, a few former AfroBasket Women stars such as Nigeria's Mfon Udoka and Mozambique's Clarisse Machanguana are in Yaounde following the Road to Rio 2016.

Quarter-Finals Preview: Eight teams do battle to reach AfroBasket Women 2015 Semi-Finals - Oct 1, 2015

(AfroBasket Women 2015) - Three former winners as well as reigning champions Angola head a group of eight teams that will do battle on Thursday to reach the AfroBasket Women 2015 Semi-Finals in Yaounde, Cameroon.

Against all odds, Egypt - who received a wild card invitation to participate in the tournament - have suddenly become the team to watch out for as they will take on tournament hosts Cameroon.

The question of the moment at AfroBasket Women 2015 is: can Egypt become a giant beater?

Gabon, who returned to the competition after a decade-long absence, will take on Angola.

Without a doubt the highly-anticipated match-up will involve two former Africa champions when Senegal take on Mali.

Mozambique, one of the two Africa representatives at 2014 FIBA Women's World Championship, will square off against title contenders Nigeria.

Here is a look at the four Quarter-Finals (all times local; GMT +1)

Mozambique (3-2) v Nigeria (4-1) (14:30)
Nigeria opened their AfroBasket Women 2015 campaign losing to Angola, but since then Scott Nnaji's has regrouped and look transformed.

They enter the Last Eight of the competition really looking more like a title contender.

If statistics are anything to go by, then Nigeria's tournament-high 88.4 points per game, give them a clear advantage over Mozambique, who score 68.8 points per contest.

Although Nigeria are favourites, Olayinka Sanni says they should be cautious.

"We are looking forward to the competition and we are not going to overlook them," Sanni said.

"The Angola game was a bit difficult for us, but we are not stuck on that, we came back. We tried to refocus and we regained our confidence with the last four games."

After losing to Mali and Cameroon, Mozambique made sure to secure Group-A's third spot.

The Southern African region nation, who are competing in Yaounde without number of key players such as Leia Dongue - one of the best Africa-based talents may be the underdogs in the series. And with veteran guard Deolinda Ngulela running the team's offense, anything could be possible.

Ngulela, who has averaged 17 points against title contenders Mali and Cameroon, has already proved she is capable of beating whoever opponent comes her way.

Senegal (3-2) v Mali (4-1) (16:45)
Senegal, the 10-time African champions, advanced to the Quarter-Finals after losing to continental rivals Angola and Nigeria in the Group Phase.

But beating Egypt on the final day of the Group Phase gives Moustapha Gaye's side the confidence needed moving forward in the competition.

Although Senegal tend to score more points and share the ball better than Mali, the game could go either way as there is not a clear-cut favourite.

Mali arrived at AfroBasket Women 2015 after winning the All-Africa Games in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.

They have shown an impressive level of competitiveness throughout the Group Phase and losing by one point to hosts Cameroon does not necessarily diminish their chances in the tournament.

Usually, Amara Traore's team plays aggressive defense, but it is far from being the most efficient scoring side, especially as it averages 24 turnovers per game.

Kankou Coulibaly, the team's leading scorer, told FIBA.com that she is yet to find her rhythm but she is rushing to get there against Senegal.

"In Brazzaville [All Africa Games 2015], I was able to defend and score points, but I haven't reached my potential yet. I am going to get there. Hopefully, it is going to be in the next round," she said.

But how can Mali get away with a win?

"We need to be more focused in order to keep our expectations alive," she concluded.

Egypt (3-2) v Cameroon (5-0) (19:00)
After making a serious statement by beating Angola in the Group Phase, Egypt indicated they were no longer the outsiders in the competition. However, their defeat against Senegal raised questions about their consistency.

Now, taking on hosts Cameroon in front of an expected rowdy crowd should test the North Africans' ability to face adversity.

In theory Cameroon are favourites to advance to the Semi-Finals for the second time in a row, but surely it won't come without a fight.

Cameroon are the only undefeated team in the competition, which sums up their potential.

However, for some strange reason, Alain Zedong's team tend to get off to slow starts. Even against lowly South Africa, Cameroon struggled to take control of the game.

It's the decisive phase of the competition, and making free throws should be crucial for the hosts as they shot only 57.3 percent from the line in the Group Phase.

Egypt, the youngest team in the tournament averaging just 20 years of age, are very competitive and have dominated Africa youth competitions in recent years.

Should they reach the Semi-Finals, it would be their biggest achievement ever.

Gabon (2-3) v Angola (4-1) (21:15)
Despite the loss to Egypt, defending champions Angola finished top of Group-A thanks to their win over Nigeria.

But facing Geraldine Robert's Gabon should be a challenge for Jaime Covilha's side.

At first glance, the Angolans, who seek their fifth consecutive appearance in the semis, are favourites, but first, they will need to show their ability to stop Robert, who leads the tournament in scoring and rebounding.

Angola's rotation is probably their main assets as the team's bench averages a staggering 36.8 points per game, unlike Gabon's 4.6.

Running the show at AfroBasket Women 2015 - Oct 1, 2015

(AfroBasket Women 2015) - A number of players had such a big impact at AfroBasket Women 2015 Group Phase that as the tournament enters the Quarter-Finals on Thursday we look back at their performances, recalling how they run the show in the Cameroon capital city of Yaounde.

In fairness there is still some work to be done in qualitative terms of game on the African continent, especially in the tactical side.

But it can't be denied that the quality of players taking to the court in Yaounde has risen.

It's Africa celebrating women's basketball.

Egypt's Soraia Deghady has become one of the most exciting player to watch out for in the competition.

The 20-year-old point guard, who built her name at FIBA Africa youth tournaments, has proven her talent in Yaounde with incredible shooting, driving to the basket as well as her trademark no-look passes.

While Egypt - who received a wild card invitation to participate at AfroBasket Women 2015 - have become the tournament's cinderella, the 1.75m guard has turned into the team's secret weapon.

She has not started any of Egypt's five games so far, but when head coach Tark Elkattan calls her up off the bench, she reenergises the team's offense.

Deghady averaged 12.4 points and two assists per game in the Group Phase.

Along with Deghady, 24-year-old forward Menatalla Awad, the duo plays significant roles for the youngest team - averaging 20 years of age - in the tournament.

Unlike Deghady, Mozambique's Deolinda Ngulela is an AfroBasket Women veteran.

The 34-year-old point guard is making her fourth appearance in the tournament.

Mozambique are competing without some of key her players such as Leia Dongue and Rute Muianga, but Ngulela has taken care of the team.

Seeing her running up and down the floor it suggests that age is just a number for Ngulela who averages team-highs 12.6 points and 2.8 assists per contest.

For most of the Group Phase, Ngulela - who serves as a player-coach at local club Costa do Sol - has done a bit of everything for Mozambique. From driving to the basket, shooting from long range, Ngulela was there, but it is at playmaking that she has made the biggest impact in the tournament so far.

It remains to be seen how Ngulela plays out against Nigeria in the Quarter-Finals, after all Mozambique are aiming at reaching the Semi-Finals for the second time in a row.

Anyone watching this year's AfroBasket Women does not necessarily needs to be a basketball expert to realise how much of an impact Geraldine Robert has made in the competition.

The 34-year-old, along with Tania Angue, have put Gabon back in the African basketball map.

Robert, who was named the Most Valuable Player in the French League a couple of years ago, is on a mission with her country.

She not only leads the tournament in points and rebounding, but she also propels her team when they need her most.

As Gabon advance to the Quarter-Finals to take on reigning champions Angola, Robert is likely to cause the Angolans a bit of a headache.

Although Gabon finished fourth in Group-A, advancing to the Last Eight has proven a major success for a team which is making its return to the competition after a decade-long absence.

Talking about Nigeria's campaign at AfroBasket Women 2015 requires inevitably detailing Adaora Elonu's performances.

The team leading is making such a big impact that when she unperformed, Nigeria lost.

As Nigeria fell to Angola in their first game in the tournament, Elonu finished with a single point.

However, Elonu's talent should not be judged by a single game as she has proven with the remaining four games ahead of the Quarter-Finals.

The 25-year-old has such a finesse attacking the rim, that it is unsurprising that she leads Nigeria in scoring with 14 points.

While the 1.85m takes care of Scott Nnaji's team scoring, Ndidi Madu looks after Nigeria's rebounding with a team-high 9.2 boards per contest.

If hosts Cameroon have remained the only undefeated team in the competition with five consecutive victories, Ramses Lonlack has surely be partly responsible for such an impressive Group Phase campaign.

The former Memphis University student is not just leaving a dream of playing in front of home fans and relatives.

The 1.75m forward is carrying a nation leading Cameroon with 14 points per game.

And, of course, the 26-year-old has now won the hearts of local fans..

We could go on and on, but the list of top performers in the tournament could not be complete with the likes of Nadir Manuel (Angola), Mame Sy (Senegal), Nadia Peruch-Niang (Guinea) and Lina Mahsas of Algeria.
