Curtain fall on Mali 2011 Afrobasket as Senegal, Angola battle for supremacy - Oct 2, 2011

The 22nd edition of Africa biggest women basketball championship FIBA Africa Championship for Women tagged, Mali 2011 Afrobasket for Women comes to an end today (Sunday) at the Stade du 26 Mars, Bamako, Mali with the grand finale jump-starting at 18H00 between defending champion and record chasing Senegal and Angola.

Both side from pool-B of the championship made it to the today final when they decision their semi-finals opponents with Senegal stopping a third title ambition of Nigeria by 89-63 points in the second semi-final while Angola prove book-makers wrong that indeed home support does not translate to home advantage when humble host Mali in the first semi-final to secure her grand finale ticket.

Road to the Grand-Final: Senegal and Angola came out from Group-B of the championship which tip-off on September 23, with Senegal leading other teams in the group- which include Nigeria to the knock-stage without dropping a game while Angola lost just one game to Senegal (42-63) making it the fourth time both side will be clashing in one month with Senegal having the upper hand having two out of their three previous met.

Aya Traore Vs Nacissela Mauricio: both share the captain band with Traore leading in this pairing as the reigning Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Afrobasket but Mauricio surely is not a push over when it come to propelling her teammates which she has done excellent especially at the knock-out stage.

While Traore has been a little passive in the championship except some occasional flashes Nacissela has been a dependable leader for her Angola teammates in all the games they have played so far.

Both players were at the opposite side during the gold medal game of the 10th All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique with Senegal running away with a 67-54 points victory which makes todays grand finale to be interesting as Mauricio would not to be a prey to the Senegalese in another final especially with London 2012 Olympic Games ticket in sight.

About Aya Traore Senegal Captain: A very discipline player and leader, Aya bring to the court experience and exposure having played in some of the best league around the globe though she might not be as explosive as she was in the 2007 and 2009 editions of the Afrobasket for women but that does not remove the fact she is one of present-day living legend of Africa women basketball.

Always on the quiet side but very deadly when in her element a situation that saw her pouring 24 points past Nigeria (her best so far) in the second semi-final on Saturday.

Mali 2011 Afrobasket for Women: Battle shift to Quarter-finals - Sep 30, 2011

The battle for Africa direct sole London 2011 Olympic Games ticket has now shifted to the quarter-finals of the 22nd Afrobasket for Women as the women have been separated from the girls as eight teams who made it to the knock-out strategise for action.

The lucky eight teams that made it from the group stage of the championship include host and 2007 champion Mali who lead three other teams from group-A, the other teams are Mozambique, Cote dIvoire and Democratic Republic of Congo and from group-B are defending champion and Africa most crowned women national team, Senegal, Angola, two-time champion Nigeria and Cameroon.

All four quarter-finals games will be decided at the newly constructed Stade du 26 Mars gymnasium, Bamako, Mali with Nigeria and Mozambique engaging each other at 14H00; Democratic Republic of Congo will test the might of reigning champion Senegal at 16H00; Cameroon battle host Mali at 18H00 with Cote dIvoire taking on Angola at 20H00.

Nigeria Vs Mozambique the first quarter-final between Nigeria and Mozambique will be a repeat of the third place game between both sides at the 10th Africa Games in Maputo with Nigeria running away with the bronze medal leaving the Mozambican who were host to finish the Games with nothing.

The Mali 2011 is a different setting as they eye a place at the 2012 Olympic Games; Nigeria will rely heavily on her defensive style of play but must watch it against a mobile Mozambican who seems to be one of the best perimeter team at the Mali 2011 Afrobasket.

RD Congo Vs Senegal Pundits may have given the game to Senegal judging by her pedigree but basketball gets more tougher as the championship gets tougher and one thing the Senegalese side must guide against is over confidence which spelt doom for their men side at the Afrobasket for Men in Antananarivo, Madagascar just last month.

Though the Lioness no doubt are on top of their game but against a die-hard Congolese side a big bargain is surely on offer as the Democratic Republic of Congo side may not boost of solid line-up as the Senegalese but they cannot be written off with the wave of the hand.

Cameroon Vs Mali Cameroon who has not disappointed in the championship so far despite finishing fourth from group-B they will surely have the Malian who have the backing of their vociferous fans to see them through the den of the Lioness from Cameroon.

Cameroon who was eliminated at this stage of the championship two years ago in Madagascar would attempt to make history and look upto history that a host can be defeated right in front of its fans just as Mali did to Senegal in the grand finale of the 2007 edition when they won the trophy for the first time.

Cote dIvoire Vs Angola Cote dIvoire could be describe as a team with nine-live, when many thought their participation in the 2nd Afrobasket have come to an end owing to their not impressive performance in their earlier games in group-A the strong FIBA Africa Zone-3 side prove book makers wrong by sneaking into the last eight as they regain composure in her last two preliminary games against Ghana and Tunisia as they try Angola for size in the last quarter final on Friday.

The unpredicted pairing could go either way as both sides parade youthful and determine players as the race for the title gets keener.
