NBL Round 17: Blazers defeat City Oilers

The games at this stage are more interesting as they can be crucial for the final standings in Regular Season. Despite we already know who is stronger and who is weaker, there may be still last minute surprises and upsets. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of top-ranked City Oilers (15-4) on the court of fourth ranked Blazers on Friday night. Visitors were edged by Blazers 63-61. Blazers forced 28 City Oilers turnovers. DR Congolese center Amisi Saidi (200-1987) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 14 rebounds. Center Daniel Monoja (197-1993) contributed with 6 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Blazers' coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Okello James answered with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 18 rebounds for City Oilers. Blazers (13-4) have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They moved-up to third place. Defending champion City Oilers still keep top position with four games lost. Blazers are looking forward to face KCCA P. (#7) in the next round. City Oilers' supporters also look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Kampala to the arena JKL Dolphins.
NBL top team - City Oilers (15-4) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed seventh ranked KCCA P. (10-9) 100-66. Nigerian Francis Azolibe stepped up and scored 28 points and 8 rebounds for the winners and Ivan Muhwezi chipped in 19 points and 4 steals. Center Daniel Gaaki (-1992) responded with 17 points. KCCA P.'s coach gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Defending champion maintains first place with 15-4 record. KCCA P. at the other side keeps the seventh position with nine games lost. City Oilers' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Kampala to the arena JKL Dolphins.
Bottom-ranked Falcons is still unable to win any game. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their 20th consecutive match to fourth ranked Blazers (13-4) 100-42 on Saturday evening. Chuol Nyuot nailed a double-double by scoring 32 points and 13 rebounds for the winning side. Blazers' coach felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Kenneth Mesho came up with 12 points and 9 rebounds for Falcons in the defeat. The victory was the eighth consecutive win for Blazers. They moved-up to third place. Falcons lost their twentieth game in a row. They still close the standings. Blazers will meet KCCA P. (#7) in the next round. Falcons' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Kampala UPDF.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 17: Victoria USY were smashed by Our Saviour on the road 76-55. JKL Dolphins was destroyed by Ndejje Angels on its own court 53-80. Betway Power unfortunately lost to Tropical R. in a road game 82-87. Winless Falcons was rolled over KIU Titans at home 64-109.



Blazers - City Oilers 63-61

Our Saviour - Victoria USY 76-55

No shocking result in a game when ninth ranked Our Saviour (8-11) crushed 12th ranked Victoria USY (5-15) in Kampala 76-55 on Saturday. Our Saviour made 18-of-21 free shots (85.7 percent) during the game. They also forced 26 Victoria USY turnovers. Guard Joseph Wacha (-1991) nailed 30 points and 4 assists for the winning side and power forward Moses Mugisha (-1984) accounted for 12 points and 16 rebounds. Maker Mayen came up with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds and Nyong Marrier added 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Victoria USY in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Newly promoted Our Saviour maintains ninth place with 8-11 record. Victoria USY at the other side, also newcomer in the league, keeps the twelfth position with 15 games lost. There was a minor upset when 8th ranked JKL Dolphins (9-10) were smashed by eleventh ranked Ndejje Angels (6-12) in Kampala 80-53 on Saturday. Ndejje Angels forced 32 JKL Dolphins turnovers. Samuel Ajak (198-1999) nailed 30 points and 8 rebounds for the winning side and Joseph Kumbai accounted for 20 points and 13 rebounds. Ndejje Angels' coach felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. Mabor Makol came up with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 16 rebounds and Magok Deng added 7 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists respectively for JKL Dolphins in the defeat. Ndejje Angels maintains eleventh place with 6-12 record. Loser JKL Dolphins keep the eighth position with ten games lost. There was a surprise result when tenth ranked Tropical R. (7-12) won against at home 4th placed Betway Power (13-6) 87-82 on Sunday. Tropical R. forced 22 Betway Power turnovers. Allan Nandala nailed 20 points and 6 rebounds for the winning side and Juma Osman accounted for 18 points and 7 rebounds. Four Tropical R. players scored in double figures. Guard Innocent Ochera (-1997) came up with 22 points (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!) and forward Samad Imran (-1993) added 13 points and 9 rebounds respectively for Betway Power in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Newly promoted Tropical R. maintains tenth place with 7-12 record. Loser Betway Power keeps the fourth position with six games lost. Tropical R. will meet at home Victoria USY (#12) in the next round. Betway Power will play against KIU Titans (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

KIU Titans forced 38 Falcons turnovers and outrebounded them 57-42 including a 40-29 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 34 assists comparing to just 14 passes made by Falcons' players. Okoth Henry nailed 32 points for the winning side and Kenyan center Fidel Odur Okoth (203-1996) accounted for 20 points and 11 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). Four KIU Titans players scored in double figures. Coach 's team controlled all game and the coach could let to play 11 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Forward Emmanuel Mwesigwa came up with a double-double by scoring 11 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists and Mark Ngobi added 14 points respectively for Falcons in the defeat. The victory was the third consecutive win for KIU Titans. They moved-up to sixth place. Falcons lost their twentieth game in a row. They still close the standings. KIU Titans will meet higher ranked Betway Power (#4) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
