NBL Round 21 (Regular Season): Derby game ends with Sommet's defeat of Jaguars

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Kampala: Sommet (#5) and Jaguars (#7). Sommet (7-5) won against visiting Jaguars (5-7) 64-50. Sommet forced 22 Jaguars turnovers. Strangely Jaguars outrebounded Sommet 53-41 including 17 on the offensive glass. It was a good game for forward Peter Cheng who led his team to a victory with 25 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Joseph Chuma (-1991) contributed with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Center Peter Sifuma (-1996) answered with 9 points, 16 rebounds and 4 blocks for Jaguars. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Sommet moved-up to fourth place, which they share with KCCA P. Jaguars lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the eighth position with seven games lost.
Another exciting game was again a derby between two teams from Kampala: City Oilers (#1) and KCCA P. (#4). City Oilers (12-1) crushed visiting KCCA P. (7-5) by 19 points 74-55. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of KCCA P.. Sudanese center Titus Lual (201-1998) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 10 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks for the winners and Landry Ndikumana chipped in 16 points. The best for the losing side was forward Emmanuel Odongkara (-1989) with 5 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. City Oilers have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 12-1 record. KCCA P. at the other side keeps the fourth position with five games lost. They share it with Sommet.
Another exciting game was again a derby match of two local teams from Kampala: UCU Canons (#6) and Rezlife S. (#3). UCU Canons (6-5) won against visiting Rezlife S. (9-4) 69-65. Flore Dushime nailed 26 points and 8 rebounds for the winning side. Hon Kwany came up with 20 points for Rezlife S. in the defeat. Rezlife S.'s coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. UCU Canons maintains sixth place with 6-5 record. Loser Rezlife S. keeps the third position with four games lost.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 21: Kampala R. was smashed by UPDF on the road 92-70. UMU won against JKL Dolphins on its own court 84-79. City Oilers managed to outperform Rezlife S. in Kampala 70-55.

It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of KCCA P.. City Oilers brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. Sudanese center Titus Lual (201-1998) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 10 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks for the winners and Burundian forward Landry Ndikumana (198-1995) chipped in 16 points. The best for the losing side was forward Emmanuel Odongkara (-1989) with 5 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and Stanley Mugerwa scored 11 points. Flore Dushime nailed 26 points and 8 rebounds for the winning side and Marvin Okurut accounted for 21 points and 6 rebounds. Hon Kwany came up with 20 points and center Rin Tueny Mabor (-1996) added 10 points and 11 rebounds respectively for Rezlife S. in the defeat. No shocking result in a game when ninth ranked UPDF (3-8) crushed at home bottom-ranked Kampala R. (2-10) 92-70 on Sunday. UPDF dominated down low during the game scoring 72 of its points in the paint compared to Kampala R.'s 32. They outrebounded Kampala R. 57-29 including a 20-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. UPDF looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Kampala R.'s players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when UPDF made 7 blocks. Peter Akok nailed a triple-double by scoring 17 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists for the winning side and Bolton Rujumba accounted for 16 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. UPDF's coach felt very confident that he used 11 players saving starting five for next games. Francis Kasinde came up with 25 points and 6 rebounds and guard Gideon Kasasa (-1998) added 16 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists respectively for Kampala R. in the defeat. Everything could happen in Kampala at the game between two tied teams. Both eleventh ranked UMU and 10th ranked JKL Dolphins had identical 2-9 record. This time UMU used a home court advantage and defeated the opponent from Kampala 84-79 on Sunday night. UMU dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to JKL Dolphins' 38. UMU forced 24 JKL Dolphins turnovers and had a 43-32 advantage in offensive rebounds.
