D1 Round 16 (Regular Season): EA Univ is defeated by REG in a derby game

Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Kigali: REG (#1) and EA Univ (#8). EA Univ was smashed at home by 34 points 62-96 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. REG dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to EA Univ's 44. REG forced 33 EA Univ turnovers and outrebounded them 51-32 including a 26-15 advantage in offensive rebounds. REG looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of Paul Akon who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 25 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals and the former international Sandrine Mushikiwabo (182-1995) who added 15 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side guard Ange Uwiringiyimana responded with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Undefeated REG (20-0) have an impressive 16-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with a perfect record of 20 victories in a row. EA Univ at the other side dropped to the seventh place with 11 games lost.

The winners were led by the former international point guard Odile Tetero (162-1998) who scored that evening 17 points and 8 assists and Paul Akon supported her with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Even 18 points and 6 rebounds by the former international center Charlotte Umugwaneza (195-1984) did not help to save the game for APR. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Undefeated REG (20-0) have an impressive 16-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with a perfect record of 20 victories in a row. APR at the other side keeps the second place with three games lost.

The Hoops were defeated at home 62-66 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of The Hoops. Kamba Diakite fired 21 points and 4 assists for the winners. APR's coach Charles Mushumba used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Feza Ebengo produced a double-double by scoring 12 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists for lost side. APR maintains second position with 16-3 record having five points less than leader REG. Loser The Hoops keep the fourth place with eight games lost. They share the position with RP-IPRC Huye.

There were no shocking results in the other games in round 16: Azomco destroyed UR Kigali on the opponent's court 83-39. UR BBC was outscored by RP-IPRC Huye in a home game 45-66. UR BBC was rolled over EA Univ on the road 97-50. GSMRR lost to defending champion REG on its own court 50-86. Bottom-ranked UR Kigali was smashed by Gahini in a road game 49-83.

UR Kigali - Azomco 39-83

Very expected game when 11th ranked UR Kigali (1-18) was crushed at home by sixth ranked Azomco (9-9) 83-39 on Wednesday. Azomco held UR Kigali to an opponent 19.7 percent shooting from the field compared to 33.0 percent accuracy of the winners. Azomco forced 30 UR Kigali turnovers and outrebounded them 66-47 including a 25-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. South Sudanese Nivin Lokuku (-2003) fired a double-double by scoring 14 points and 21 rebounds for the winners. Guard Lea Mutarutwa chipped in a double-double by scoring 14 points and 16 rebounds. Five Azomco players scored in double figures. Manishimwe Izadufasha (-2001) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points and 15 rebounds and forward Angelique Uwimanimpaye added 7 points respectively for lost side. UR Kigali's coach gave up on the game allowing to play twelve players seeing no chance for a win. Azomco have an impressive five-game winning streak. Newly promoted Azomco maintains sixth position with 9-9 record. Loser UR Kigali stay dead last with 18 lost games.
