D1 Round 7 (Regular Season): Derby game ends with REG's defeat of The Hoops

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Kigali: REG (#4) and The Hoops (#8). The Hoops were defeated at home 71-83 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. REG forced 26 The Hoops turnovers. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international point guard Rosine Micomyiza (162-1995) who helped to win the game recording 34 points (!!!), 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Ramla Munezero (-2003) contributed with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals for the winners. DR Congolese Feza Ebengo (-1999) answered with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 21 rebounds and 4 assists for The Hoops. Defending champion (5-1) moved-up to third place. The Hoops at the other side dropped to the seventh position with four games lost.
Another exciting game was again a derby between two teams from Kigali: Kepler (#1) and APR (#4). Kepler (10-0) won against visiting APR (5-2) 66-54. It was a great evening for Beninese center Veronica Keita (190-2001) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 22 rebounds. Nelly Akariza helped adding 12 points and 10 rebounds. At the losing side international center Assouma Uwizeye (182-1996) responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 13 rebounds. APR's coach Charles Mushumba rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Undefeated Kepler have an impressive series of ten victories in a row. Newly promoted Kepler maintains first place with 10-0 record. APR at the other side keeps the fourth position with two games lost.
UR BBC's fans can finally celebrate the first win of their team after eight consecutive losses. The victory is especially important as it came on the road game in Kigali, where they defeated UR Kigali (0-9) 47-33 on Saturday. It was an exceptional evening for Hirwa Sandrine who led the winners and scored 13 points and 5 rebounds. Angelique Uwimanimpaye came up with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals for UR Kigali in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. UR BBC maintains tenth place with 1-8 record. It was UR Kigali's ninth loss in a row. They still close the standings with nine games lost.

Other games in round 7 were not that significant. Azomco beat Gahini on the road 70-52. The Hoops destroyed UR BBC on its own court 81-42. Winless UR Kigali was outscored by Azomco in Kigali 74-38.
The most impressive performance of 7th round was 16 points and 10 rebounds by Nivin Lokuku of Azomco.

UR Kigali - UR BBC 33-47

UR BBC's fans can finally celebrate the first win of their team after eight consecutive losses. The victory is especially important as it came on the road game in Kigali, where they defeated UR Kigali (0-9) 47-33 on Saturday. UR BBC held UR Kigali to an opponent 17.5 percent shooting from the field compared to 22.9 percent accuracy of the winners. UR BBC forced 22 UR Kigali turnovers and outrebounded them 60-44 including 21 on the offensive glass. It was an exceptional evening for Hirwa Sandrine who led the winners and scored 13 points and 5 rebounds. Forward Charlotte Iradukunda accounted for 9 points and 8 rebounds for the winning side. There was a small surprise when sixth ranked Azomco (4-4) beat on the road their close opponent Gahini (2-4) 70-52 on Saturday. Azomco forced 22 Gahini turnovers and outrebounded them 56-36 including a 37-26 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was an exceptional evening for forward Fabiola Umunyuragaju who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 13 rebounds. Stephanie Kanyere accounted for 12 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists for the winning side. Four Azomco players scored in double figures. Aline Uwimana came up with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds and Josiane Ishimwe added 14 points respectively for Gahini in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the third consecutive win for Azomco. Newly promoted Azomco maintains sixth place with 4-4 record. Loser Gahini dropped to the eighth position with four games lost.

Rather expected game when 10th ranked UR BBC (1-8) was smashed by eighth ranked The Hoops (3-4) in Kigali 81-42 on Sunday. The Hoops held UR BBC to an opponent 25.0 percent shooting from the field compared to 32.6 percent accuracy of the winners. The Hoops forced 29 UR BBC turnovers and had a 25-14 advantage in offensive rebounds. The Hoops looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by UR BBC's players. It was an exceptional evening for DR Congolese Feza Ebengo (-1999) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 19 rebounds. Center Rebecca Cyuzuzo (192-2007) accounted for 19 points and 12 rebounds for the winning side. The Hoops' coach Patrick Habiyambere felt very confident using 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists comparing to just 6 passes made by UR Kigali's players. It was an exceptional evening for South Sudanese Nivin Lokuku (-2003) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Fabiola Umunyuragaju accounted for 10 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side.
