Senegal revenged for the only loss in All-Africa Games they suffered in
the third round of the competition and handled Nigeria in the title decider.
Nigeria entered the game with a perfect record and hoped to extend it but
Senegal were full of their own ambitions.
Nigeria had a slight advantage in the first quarter and outscored Senegal 15:13.
But it never threatened Senegalese team and they punched back in the second
frame. Senegal speeded up their offense and left Nigeria behind 37:28 at
halftime.
Both teams tried not to make mistakes in the third quarter which resulted in a
slow pace and defence dominating on the court. Nigeria took a a narrow edge 9:8
in the quarter but still trailed. Nigeria needed a strong performance in the
fourth frame to revive the intrigue however
Diodio Diouf (170-G-84) and J Senghore paced Senegal and maintained the
lead. Nigeria never managed to get close enough for a strike and surrendered the
title.
J Senghore led Senegal with 13 points and 6 rebounds.
Diodio Diouf nailed 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the winners.
Abolanle Sanni had 15 points and 8 rebounds for Nigeria.
Joyce Ekworomadu (175-G/F-86) added 12 points in defeat.
Nigeria outrebounded the champions 40:38, but struggled from the field. They
converted 32% of field goals, while Senegalese players shot 40%.

Tunisia - DR Congo 75:67
Tunisia completed their participation at All-Africa Games with a win. They
defeated DR Congo to finish the tournament at the 7th spot.
The teams played a close basketball at the start of the game. They ended the
opening quarter tied at 21. Tunisia came strong in the second frame as they
limited DR Congo to 7 points and spurred ahead to a 41:28 lead at halftime.
DR Congo tried to change the course of the game in the third stanza when
Ilda Rosada helped her side outscore Tunisia 23:21. DR Congo had some fierce
attempts to climb bac into this one but Tunisia held on to the lead and
celebrated a tough victory at the end.
Maha Chelly (-82) netted 17 points for Tunisia. Mouna Kherifi nailed 15 points
for the winners.
Ilda Rosada replied with 14 points for DR Congo.
Mangongo Nelly provided 12 points and game-high 17 rebounds in defeat.
DR Congo had an obvious advantage under the rims outrebounding their opponents
50:31. However they lacked accuracy from free throw line converting just 50% and
hit no three pointers. Tunisia knocked down 47% of field goals and scored 8 long
range attempts.

Kenya - Algeria 78:67
Kenya managed to overcome hosting Algeria in the battle for the 5th spot at
All-Africa Games. A huge second half performance from Kenya players resulted in
a confident win.
Algeria got to a better start as the home crowd cheered them up. They outscored
Kenya 18:13 in the opening frame and continued to dominate in the second. The
gap grew to 32:26 at halftime and it seemed that Algeria where en route to
clinch the 5th place at the tournament. However Kenya emerged strong in the
second half and thrashed Algerian defence. Kenya basketballers produced 29
points in the third quarter to surge ahead and never looked back on the way to
the win.
Kenya had 5 players scoring in double digits.
Josephine Owino (184-C-83) had 18 points and 14 rebounds to pace the team.
H Indasi added 14 points for the winners. Kenza Gheroumi chipped in game-high
23 points for Algeria.
Rachida Belaidi (-79) poured in 15 points in defeat.
Kenya outreabounded the home side 48:30. They also limited Algeria to just 37%
of field goals hitting 53% themselves.

Bronze medal game
Angola - Mozambique 53:43
Angola completed their All-Africa Games campaign with a win over
Mozambique. This victory put them on pedestal as they claimed the Bronze medals.
Angola dominated the first and fourth quarters to celebrate success at the end
of this one. They cruised through the tournament with just a single loss to
Senegal in the semifinal.

Nigeria - Mozambique

Nigeria defeated Mozambique in the second semifinal of All-African Games in
Algeria. Nigeria lost no games earlier in the tournament and actually entered
this semifinal as favorites. They however lost the opening frame 12:13 and had
to play a catch up for some time in the second quarter. But by the end of the
second frame Nigeria were ahead 27:23 and never looked back from now on. They
outscored Mozambique 18:10 in the third quarter and easily secured a win at the
end.
Nigeria will now take on Senegal in the tournament decider tomorrow. Mozambique
will play versus Angola for the Bronze medals.

Senegal posted a spectacular performance in the semifinal against Angola to book
thier title game ticket. Angola who entered the semis with a perfect record
hoped to for a positive outcome. However Senegal did not give them a trace of
chance en route to the victory.
Teams started the game bravely and exchanged the shots throughout the first
quarter. Senegal appeared to be more accurate and secured a narrow lead 18:16.
In the second quarter the game turned into a defensive battle with no team
rushing ahead. Senegalese players adjusted better to the tempo and limited
Angola to only 6 points in the second frame. They were up 30:22 at halftime and
never stopped after the break. The gap kept on growing and Senegal extended it
to 43:31 after three quarters. Angola's defence collapsed in the final stanza
allowing Senegal to drop 28 points and celebrate a confident victory.
Diodio Diouf (170-G-84) produced 17 points for Senegal.
Khady Diakhate contributed 15 points for the winners.
Irene Guerreiro (-70) nailed 12 points to lead Angola. Sonia Cardoso provided 10
and 5 boards in a defeat.

Angola - Tunisia

Angola team cruised past Tunisia en route to the semifinal of the
All-Africa Games in Algeria. Angola posted their 5 straight win at the
tournament and successfully booked their semifinal ticket.
Tunisia tried to stay close in the openign frame and trailed by only 4 points
after it 17:21. However in the second quarter favourites put on aggressive
defence and limited options for Tunisia. Angola easily extended the advantage to
40:29 at halftime. Tunisia simply could not find the way to overcome Angola's
defence and bogged in it committing numerous mistakes. The gap widened to 55:39
after three quarters and Angola completed the task in the fourth.
Angola dominated the boards 34:20. They also converted 54% of field goals
comparing to 45% from Tunisia. Tumba Vicente led the team with 14 points for
Angola. Nacissela Mauricio added 12 points and 6 rebounds in a win. Mouna
Kherifi scored game-high 19 points for Tunisia.
Maha Chelly (-82) produced 10 points as Tunisia stepped out of the title race.
Angola is scheduled to play in the semis tonight.

Mozambique - Kenya

Mozambique National team played strongly in the center of the
quarterfinal against Kenya to ensure the win and the semifinal birth. A
spectacular team effort of Mozambique players resulted in a overwhelming
dominace and a confident win at the end.
Kenya however led early in the game. They nailed 24 points to secure a 4-point
lead after the first frame. But Mozambique reacted quickly and stun Kenya in the
second quarter. Mozambique held their opponents to 9 points and grabbed a 44:33
advantage at halftime. Kenya suffered another massive blow right after the break
as Mozambique won the third frame 31:12 to clear off for good. As the starters
were sidelined in the final stanza Kenya managed to win it 17:7 but it had
little impact on the outcome.
Ana Azinheira (156-G-80) dropped 19 points to pace Mozambique. Carmen Gimo added
15 points for the winners.
Josephine Owino (184-C-83) scored 15 points and pulled down 5 boards for
Kenya. Volinet Wanyama netted 13 points in a loss.
Mozambique converted 60% of field goals limiting Kenya to just 42%. They also
outrebounded the opponents 24:22.

Algeria - Senegal

Algeria were not able to beat the forecasts and overcome one of the
main basketball forces in Africa Senegal in the quarterfinal battle yesterday.
Senegal dominated the game and deservedly won the fixture advancing to the
semifinal.
Senegalese team gave no chance for the home side winning all four quarters of
the encounter and demonstrating a spectacular piece of basketball. They got to a
better start and led 13:7 after the opening frame. Algeria posted a stronger
second quarter but still trailed by 7 points at halftime 19:26. Senegalese
players emerged from the third quarter winning already 46:32. Algeria simply
surrendered at the final stanza allowing Senegal to drop 29 points. Senegal
celebrated a confident win and advanced into the semifinal.
Astou Traore (182-F/C-81) delivered 18 points and 6 rebounds for Senegal.
Awa Doumbia (182-F-79) scored 15 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Kenza
Gheroumi replied with 11 points for Algeria. Aicha Bouderra chipped in 9 points
in defeat.
Algeria lost the fight under the rims 29:43. They also shot just 31% from the
field, including 48% from free throw line. Senegal converted massive 50% from
beyond the arc.

Nigeria - DR Congo

Nigeria continued their winning ways at the All-Africa Games in
Algeria. They posted the 4th consecutive win at the tournament and made it
through to the semifinal yesterday. DR Congo became the victims of an impressive
defensive basketball from Nigerian team.
The defending champions Nigeria dominated the game from the start as they
established an early 16:11 advantage. DR Congo had a momentum in the second
quarter when they capitalized on Nigerian losing the touch from the field and
tied the game 22:22 at halftime. But the second half put it all back for the
Tigeress. They turned on full court pressure and disabled DR Congo offense.
Congo struggled to maintain the distance and allowed Nigeria to run away to a
38:28 lead after three quarter. They also did not manage to perform any sort of
comeback in the final stanza falling short at the end.
Nigeria remained in the race to defend their title and will now play in the
semis tonight.

George Washington) and Joyle Ekworomadu nailed 10 points apiece to pace Nigeria.
Sunday Udoka contributed 8 points and 16 boards for the winners. Pauline Akonga
was the topscorer for DR Congo with 8 points and 6 boards.
Mangongo Nelly had 7 points and 8 boards in a losing effort. Nigeria had a
massive edge under the rims as they outrebounded their opponents 57:36. They
also limited DR Congo to just 25% of field goals.

Angola - Algeria

Angola recorded their 4th win at All-Africa Games yesterday.
They drove past hosting Aleria 53:42 to hand them the second loss at the
tournament.
Angola ensured a narrow lead after the opening quarter 13:12. They
capitalized on numerous mistakes of Algerian offense and rolled to a 27:21
advantage at halftime. Angola played a solid basketball never allowing the
home side to come any closer. They maintained the dominance throughout the
third quarter and won it 16:13. Putting themselves at a comfortable distance
Angola nevertheless did not stop and remained alert in the fourth frame
limiting Algeria to 8 points and celebrating an impressive 53:42 victory.
Nassecela Mauricio netted 14 points and pulled down 9 boards for Angola.
Irene Guerreiro (-70) nailed another 11 points for the winners. Soraya
Aissani chipped in 12 points in a losing effort. Samira Ferragh had 8 points
and 7 boards for the home side.
Despite having outrebounded Angola 38:34 Algeria struggled from the field
knocking down just 33% of their shots.
The victory saw Angola imrprove to 4-0 record on top of the standings and
they enter the classification round as favourites. Algeria fell to 2-2
record and start the qualifiers today.

Tunisia - Zimbabwe

Tunisia bounced back after a stunning loss to Senegal in previous round
and outscored Zimbabwe on Day 5 of action in Algeria. The faced little
obstacles on the way to their second win at the tournament yesterday.
Tunisia grabbed an early lead 20:8. They continued to dominate on the
court and outscored Zimbabwe 27:17 in the second quarter to establish a
comfortable 47:25 advantage at halftime.
Zimbabwe tried to come back in the third quarter but was not able to
limit Tinisia scoring ability and had to surrender 22 points. This meant
Tunisia piled up an unassailable 69:44 gap entering the final stanza and
eased to an overall win. Zimbabwe outscored them 27:23 in the fourth
quarter but had to face the 5th straight loss at the tournament.
Mouna Kherifi topscored for Tunisia with 29 points. Fatma Barkallah
added 20 points, 7 boards and 4 assists in a win.
Fadzai Mabasa (170-G-83) (170-G-83) had 16 points, while
Helina Nyagato (169-G-81) scored 14 points for Zimbabwe. Sibongile
Mkandla ripped down 17 rebounds in a losing effort.
Zimbabwe outrebounded the winners 47:32 but converted no three pointers
and lacked accuracy from the charity stripe with 55%.
Tunisia improved to 2-3 record, while Zimbabwe remained at the bottom of
the ladder with 0-5. The classification round is scheduled to start
today.

Cote d'Ivoire - DR Congo

Cote d'Ivoire suffered their fourth consecutive loss at All-Africa
Games in Algeria. This time they were beaten by another underdogs DR
Congo 45:48 yesterday. Both teams started the game quite carefully
and neither of them got to dominate the game. DR Congo led by just a
single point after the opening frame 13:12. A defence remained a
major factor in the second quarter as DR Congo held their opponents
to only 4 points and created a 24:16 lead at halftime.
Cote d'Ivoire bounced back after the break. They found the key to a
tight Congolese defence and outscored them 22:10 in the third
quarter. Cote d'Ivoire players entered the final stanza leading by
38:34 and maintained the gap at the start of the fourth frame. But
once again defensive effort from DR Congo team was well rewarded at
the end. They kept Cote d'Ivoire scoreless at the dying stage of the
game and celebrated a tough 48:45 victory at the end.

Jolie Yabuka provided 8 points and 9 rebounds in a win. Cote

Senegal was impressive on Day 5 of action at All-Africa Games
basketball competition. They easily overcame strong Kenya side
to record their 4th win at Algeria. Kenya meanwhile lost their
second consecutive game and worsened the record.
The teams performed a very close basketball in the opening frame
and Senegalese side took a narrow edge late in the stanza 14:12.
Things got better for Senegal in the second quarter when they
managed to mount a 32:23 lead at halftime. The real pressure
turned on for Kenya in the third frame when Senegal put on some
aggressive defence and limited them to just 6 converted points.
Kenya did not withstand the blow and never came back into this
one. Senegal completed the job in the last quarter and easily
sealed a 69:45 victory.

Action rolls in All Africa Games
Basketball competition - Jul. 17, 2007
Algeria - Cote d'Iviore 69:64
Algeria celebrated the second win at All-Africa Games in Alger. The hosts
prevailed in the third frame to come back from behind and succeed. Cote
d'Ivoire grabbed an early lead as they won the opening quarter 22:19.
Algeria tried to cut the deficit but Cote d'Ivoire held on to the advantage
and surrendered just a single point. They ensured a 36:34 gap at halftime.
The home side rebounded in the third quarter and cheered up by the local
fans managed to surge ahead. They limited their opponents to just 9 points
and established a 51:45 lead. Cote d'Ivoire tried hard to save the encounter
in the final frame but Algeria performed some tough defence and sealed a
69:64 victory at the dying stage of the game.
Kenza Gheroumi nailed 19 points in a win.
Rachida Belaidi (-79) had 14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists to pace
Algeria. Mariame Djoura netted game-high 20 points for Cote d'Ivoire.
Stephanie N'Garsanet added 15 points and 10 boards in a losing effort.
Cote d'Ivoire outrebounded the hosts 48:37 but lacked accuracy converting
just 35% of field goals.
Algeria improved to 2-1 record and will play versus Angola today. Cote
d'Ivoire fell to 0-3 record and will seek for their first win against DR
Congo later tonight.

Mozambique - DR Congo 60:48
Mozambique needed a day at rest to come back striking. After a perfect
start to All-Africa Games they suffered a sour loss to Angola two days
ago 46:48. But yesterday the fans saw a victorious squad that left no
chances to DR Congo. An impressive defence in the opening quarter
limited DR Congo to just 6 points and lifted Mozambique to a 12:6 lead.
They maintained the gap in the second quarter and finished it 26:18
ahead. DR Congo had a spark in the third frame when they outscored their
opponents 19:17 to keep the striking distance. However Mozambique were
not about to give this one up. They put on their aggressive defence and
sealed the win at the end.
Ana Azinheira (156-G-80) topscored for Mozambique with 14 points.
Mohamed Rodrigues posted another 10 points for the winners. Ida
Ilda Rosada provided 13 points for DR Congo.
Pauline Akonga (-82) ensured another 11 points and 6 boards in a

Mozambique improved to 3-1 record and faces Cameroon today. DR Congo

Senegalese team had a successful outing on Day 4 of All-Africa Games
in Algeria. They managed to overcome Tunisia 77:55 to gain their
third victory at the tournament.
Senegal proved the difference early in the game and recorded 22:16
advantage after the opening frame. They continued to roll and easily
secured the lead at halftime 39:29. Tunisia never performed any kind
of come back as they consequently lost next two quarters. Senegal
showed stability holding Tunisia to 13 points in three frames.
Diouf topscored for Senegal with 22 points and 10 boards.
Astou Traore (182-F/C-81) added 19 points and 7 rebounds in a
winning effort. Tunisia replied with 13 points from
Fatma Zagrouba (-82).
Thouraya Adsi (-82) provided another 9 points in a defeat.
Senegal dominated merely every aspect of game. They outrebounded
Tunisia 37:29 and shot more accurately from the field. Senegal
converted 55% of field goals and 68% of free throws. Tunisia
struggled from the charity stripe knocking down just 42%.
Senegal will next take on Kenya in the last encounter of the
preliminary round. Tunisia plays against Zimbabwe today.

Mali cruised past Zimbabwe on Day 4 of All-Africa Games in
Algeria. It was the first win for mali team at the tournament.
An aggressive offense from Mali left virtually no chances for
Zimbabwe team. They did not manege to prevent the attacking
basketball from Mali and had to fight back a 25:15 gap after the
opening frame. Mali however never slowed down and posted another
26 points in the second quarter to ensure a 51:29 advantage at
halftime. They actually did not give up a single frame and
easily secured another victory at the tournament.
Aminata Sininta (185-C-85) paced mali with 29 points and 21
rebounds.
Adama Sissoko (-91) added 20 points and 14 boards for the
winners.
Fadzai Mabasa (170-G-83) produced 18 points in a losing
effort.
Ailexandra Maseko (183-C-89) delivered 12 points for
Zimbabwe. Mali outrebounded Zimbabwe 50:38 and shot more
accurately from the field 55%. Zimbabwe also struggled from free
throw line converting just 51%.
Mali takes on Nigeria today. Zimbabwe meanwhile fell to 0-4
record and will battle Tunisia later tonight.

Nigeria spoiled a perfect Kenya record yesterday handing
them the first loss at the tournament. Nigeria were able to
survive a desperate late come back from Kenya team to post
their fourth victory.
The teams were all levelled after the opening frame 15:15.
But Nigeria surprised the opponents with a stunning 22:7
surge in the second and cleared off to a 37:22 lead at
halftime. Kenya however held on to it and gradually gained
control of the game. They won the third quarter 13:12 and
rushed ahead in the fourth. A tight defence allowed them to
limit Nigeria to just 8 points in the final stanza and cut
the deficit to 5 points. But Nigeria survived a late threat
and celebrated a tough win at the end.
Chioma Udeaja (192-F/C-84) and Sunday Udoka netted 14
points apiece to lead Nigeria. Izidor Enjoli added 11 points
for the winners.
Rose Ouma (178-G/F-84) provided 12 points for Kenya.
Josephine Owino (184-C-83) had 10 points and 7 rebounds
in a defeat.
Nigeria dominated the boards pulling down 37 rebounds. They
also converted 44% from the field and 70% from the charity
stripe.
Nigeria faces Mali in the last encounter of preliminary
round. Kenya takes on Senegal today.
