Gazelles Secure Double Over Republic of Ireland- July 23, 2024The Uganda Women’s National Basketball team, the Gazelles, completed a double victory over the Republic of Ireland in their friendly matches. The Gazelles won 71-56 on Monday, following an 82-69 victory on Sunday in Germany. The Gazelles started strong in Monday’s game, taking a commanding 26-18 lead after the first quarter. By halftime, they were ahead 43-27, maintaining their lead throughout the second half to secure a well-deserved win. Paige Robinson-Miller (193-F-1998, college: Florida) led the charge, shooting 4-for-9 from three-point range and scoring a game-high 23 points. Captain Jane Asinde (188-F-1999, college: UTEP) and point guard Lydia Babirye (175-PG-2004) contributed 13 and 10 points respectively, bolstering the Gazelles’ offense. For the Republic of Ireland, Anne O’Connor and Claire Melia (190-F-1999, college: St.Joseph's) each scored 11 points in a game where their team struggled with turnovers, committing 17 compared to Uganda’s 7. The Irish team was also out-rebounded 41-39. These victories provide the Gazelles with a confidence boost as they prepare for the Zone V Qualifiers, scheduled for early next year.
