Gazelles Beat Ireland in First Friendly- July 22, 2024Uganda Women’s National Basketball team, the Gazelles, defeated Republic of Ireland 82-69 in their first of two friendly matches in Germany on Sunday. The game began with a slow start for the Gazelles, who trailed 9-17 after the first quarter. However, they quickly regained their rhythm, winning the second quarter 23-12 to take a three-point lead at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, the Gazelles had extended their lead to 15 points, maintaining their momentum to secure a well-deserved victory. “We fought back, we started off really slow in the first quarter, we were just getting in together and play the game,” said guard Lydia Babirye (175-PG-2004). “Then in the second quarter we really came out stronger, played together, we made the shots and I am glad we managed to fight back and got the victory. We minimized fouls, we rebounded and finished the basketball in the second half. This gives us big confidence and we want to come out stronger in the second friendly on Monday.” Jane Asinde (188-F-1999, college: UTEP) and Paige Robinson-Miller (193-F-1998, college: Florida) led the charge for the Gazelles, scoring 20 and 26 points respectively. Claire Melia (190-F-1999, college: St.Joseph's) contributed 25 points for Ireland, who struggled with rebounds, losing 39-25 in that category. Both teams committed 11 turnovers each. “We started a little bit nervous, it’s the first game I’m coaching this team. And for some of these gals, it’s their first time being in the National team,” said Gazelles coach Goran Lojo. “But I think we had a long practice week and the girls were tired. The second quarter was better and turned the game on our side. I’m happy that the players executed well, especially Jane Asinde and Paige Robinson-Miller. The rest of the girls also did their job. Now we have to rest and wait for Monday’s tie.” The Gazelles will face off against Ireland again on Monday as they continue their preparations for the FIBA Zone V Afrobasket Qualifiers early next year.
