Stephen Gabriel gets MVP of the Week award for South African BNL- July 4, 2023
The 32-year old center had a double-double of 26 points and fourteen rebounds, while his team outclassed FS Warriors (#5, 1-3) with 44-point margin 87-43. Thanks to this victory WC Mountaineers moved-up to the 3rd position in South African BNL. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost two games earlier this season. WC Mountaineers will need more victories to improve their 3-2 record. In the team's last game Gabriel had a remarkable 81.8% from 2-point range. He has many years of experience at WC Mountaineers, through which he has constantly improved. Gabriel has impressive league stats. He is in league's top in points (6th best: 17.6ppg), rebounds (8th best: 10.6rpg) and averages solid 58.5% FGP. The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young DR Congolese power forward Emmanuel Shine (199-F/C-1994) of league's best team Tshwane S.. Shine impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 21 points and 21 rebounds. Of course he led Tshwane S. to another comfortable win 73-59 over slightly lower-ranked S.Panthers (#2, 3-2) being unquestionably team leader. It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the top position in Group A. Tshwane S. consolidated its place in the very top position of the standings. A very good start of the season for his team, which won so far all 5 games without any defeat. Shine is one of the most experienced players at Tshwane S. and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 22.8ppg (#3). He also registered 14.5 boards per game. The third best performed player last round was Joshua Tawengwa (192-F) of second-ranked M.Rhinos. Tawengwa scored 19 points and grabbed ten rebounds. He was a key player of M.Rhinos, leading his team to a 79-67 win against the lower-ranked FS Warriors (#5, 1-3). M.Rhinos needs these victories very badly if they think about taking over top position in Group B. Their record at this point is 3 victories and 2 lost games. Tawengwa has a very solid season.
