S.Panthers - WC Mountaineers 54-49 An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Johannesburg. Second ranked Panthers faced one of their biggest challengers Mountaineers. Host Panthers (2-1) defeated guests from Cape (2-2) 54-49. Panthers forced 22 Mountaineers turnovers. They brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. Mountaineers were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for Gabonese guard Gleen Bidza who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 17 rebounds. Forward Tshepo Mogotsi (-92) contributed with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks for the winners. The former international center Stephen Gabriel (205-91) replied with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 rebounds and swingman Sicelo Dzingwa (195-99) added 9 points and 12 rebounds in the effort for Mountaineers. Mountaineers' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Panthers maintains second position with 2-1 record behind leader KZ Marlins, which they share with Egoli Magic. Mountaineers at the other side keep the third place with two games lost. They used home court advantage to defeat Warriors (0-2) 63-47 on Saturday. Eagles held Warriors to an opponent 21.3 percent shooting from the field compared to 32.9 percent accuracy of the winners. Eagles forced 29 Warriors turnovers. Davison Chivero scored 16 points and 8 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and guard Thapelo Mkhatshwa chipped in 18 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. The best for the losing side was Job Mashwabathi (195) with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks and Phadima Mahamotsa scored 4 points and 10 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Eagles (1-2) left bottom position moving up to fourth place. The former international center Stephen Gabriel (205-91) had a double-double by scoring 19 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and the former international guard Kyle Maclean (188-94, college: UCSB) chipped in 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was Job Mashwabathi (195) with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 15 rebounds and swingman Elias Galane scored 8 points and 7 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Mountaineers maintains third position with 2-2 record behind leader KZ Marlins. Loser Warriors still closes the standings with two games lost. They share the position with EC Windbreakers. The biggest surprise took place in Tshwane where host Suns (3-0) beat league's leader Magic (2-1) 45-40 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Magic. It was a key game for the top position in the league. Suns held Magic to an opponent 21.9 percent shooting from the field compared to 29.2 percent accuracy of the winners. Suns forced 19 Magic turnovers. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Suns made 7 blocks. The best player for the winners was DR Congolese power forward Emmanuel Shine (199-94) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points and 12 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field). The former international Kagiso Ngoetjana (198-89) chipped in a double-double by scoring 10 points and 13 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was swingman Nkosinathi Sibanyoni who recorded 6 points and 22 rebounds and Tony Chukwurah added 10 points and 8 rebounds respectively. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Suns have a solid three-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader. Defending champion Magic dropped to the second place with one game lost. They share the position with S.Panthers. They were replaced at the leadership position by KZ Marlins.
