RBL Round 15 (Regular Season): Tigers beat Azomco in a derby game

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Kigali: Tigers (#5) and Azomco (#8). Tigers (10-6) crushed visiting Azomco (3-13) by 30 points 106-76. Tigers dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Azomco's 46. Tigers forced 20 Azomco turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The best player for the winners was DR Congolese center Pitchou Kambuyi (208-1988) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points and 19 rebounds. The former international Pascal Niyonkuru (193-1995) chipped in 25 points and 5 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was Jarode Aworet (-2001) who recorded a double-double by scoring 19 points and 14 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Tigers moved-up to third place, which they share with Patriots and UGB. Newly promoted Azomco keeps the eighth position with 13 games lost.
Another exciting game was again a derby between two teams from Kigali: Kepler (#6) and REG (#2). Kepler (6-10) won against visiting REG (11-5) 81-75. It was a good game for Canadian guard Chad Bowie (188-1996, college: SHSU) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 6 rebounds and 12 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). Kurt-Curry Wegscheider contributed with 32 points for the winners. DR Congolese power forward Garmine Kande (205-1999, agency: Helping Ballers) answered with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 18 rebounds and 5 blocks for REG. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Kepler maintains sixth place with 6-10 record. REG at the other side keeps the second position with five games lost.

Orion was crushed at home by 47 points 74-121 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. It was a great evening for Eric Kayondo who led his team to a victory scoring 33 points (!!!) and 7 rebounds. UGB's coach Yves Murenzi felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. The best for the losing side was Abdoul Maisouka with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 12 rebounds. UGB (10-6) have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Patriots and Tigers. Orion lost third consecutive game. They keep the seventh position with 11 games lost.

In the last two games of round 15 UGB defeated REG in Kigali 96-80. Tigers beat Kepler at home 110-97.

Another exciting game was again a derby between two teams from Kigali: Kepler (#6) and REG (#2). Kepler (6-10) won against visiting REG (11-5) 81-75. Kepler players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. It was a good game for Canadian guard Chad Bowie (188-1996, college: SHSU) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 6 rebounds and 12 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). Central African guard Kurt-Curry Wegscheider (196-2001, college: LCU) contributed with 32 points for the winners. DR Congolese power forward Garmine Kande (205-1999, agency: Helping Ballers) answered with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 18 rebounds and 5 blocks and the former international center Olivier Shyaka (197-1995) added 12 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for REG. Four REG players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Kepler maintains sixth place with 6-10 record. REG at the other side keeps the second position with five games lost.

Another exciting game was again a derby match of two local teams from Kigali: UGB (#4) and Orion (#7). Orion was crushed at home by 47 points 74-121 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. UGB dominated down low during the game scoring 72 of its points in the paint compared to Orion's 50. UGB forced 29 Orion turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 33 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by Orion's players. It was a great evening for center Eric Kayondo who led his team to a victory scoring 33 points (!!!) and 7 rebounds. Burundian center Mohamed Doumbya (-1997) helped adding 25 points, 7 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field). UGB's coach Yves Murenzi felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. The best for the losing side was Central African Abdoul Maisouka (-2001) with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 12 rebounds and forward Pacifique Ishimwe scored 14 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. REG - UGB 80-96

There was a minor upset in Kigali where second-best REG (11-5) was defeated by fourth ranked UGB (10-6) 96-80 on Friday. UGB forced 21 REG turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was a great evening for Burundian center Mohamed Doumbya (-1997) who led his team to a victory scoring 32 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Amatoe Kofi helped adding 15 points and 4 assists. Five UGB players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was the former international Prince Muhizi (-1996) with 28 points and 8 rebounds and American guard Cleveland Thomas (192-1993, college: WKU, agency: Slash Sports) scored 16 points and 4 assists. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for UGB. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Patriots and Tigers. Loser REG keeps the second position with five games lost.

The game between closely ranked teams ended with fifth ranked Tigers' (10-6) home victory over 6th ranked Kepler (6-10) 110-97 on Friday. Tigers outrebounded Kepler 59-38 including a 35-24 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great evening for DR Congolese center Pitchou Kambuyi (208-1988) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 25 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks. American point guard Michael Mays (178-1999, college: King) helped adding 29 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). Four Tigers players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was Canadian guard Chad Bowie (188-1996, college: SHSU) with 41 points (!!!), 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals and Central African guard Kurt-Curry Wegscheider (196-2001, college: LCU) scored 23 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Kepler's coach Juruni Lutwama rotated twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Tigers moved-up to third place, which they share with Patriots and UGB. Loser Kepler keeps the sixth position with ten games lost.
