We bring you last week's top performances from Nigerians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Suleiman Braimoh

   #1. This week's number one is former international power forward Suleiman Braimoh (203-89, college: Rice, currently plays in Israel). He could not help Hapoel Eilat (22-11) in their last game. Despite Braimoh's very good performance Hapoel Eilat lost 84-95 on the road to the lower-ranked (#6) Ironi Nes-Ziona. He was the top scorer with 26 points. Braimoh also added 7 boards, handed out 3 passes and blocked 2 shots in 33 minutes on the court. It's Braimoh's first season with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Braimoh averages: 15.7ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.6apg, 1.1bpg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 59.5%(135-227), 3FGP: 45.2%(33-73) and FT: 72.7% in 31 games he played so far. He played for the Nigerian senior national team three years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an international swingman Stan Okoye (198-91, college: VMI, currently plays in Spain). Okoye led Zaragoza to a victory over the eighth-ranked Baskonia (13-9) 91-81 in the Spanish Liga Endesa last Thursday. He was MVP of the game. Okoye recorded 22 points and grabbed 7 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws). Tecnyconta Zaragozais placed in the Liga Endesa. This season Okoye has very high stats. He averages: 15.1ppg, 5.1rpg, 1.4apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 45.0%, 3FGP: 43.9% and FT: 77.8%. Okoye has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and American. He is in the roster of the Nigerian senior national team.

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Melvin Ejim (201-91, college: Iowa St., currently plays in VTB United League). He was not able to help Unics Kazan (21-5) in their last game. Despite Ejim's very good performance Unics Kazan lost 98-103 on the opponent's court to the lower-ranked (#3) Khimki. He scored 18 points and added 4 passes in 32 minutes. This year Ejim's overall stats are: 8.5ppg, 5.6rpg, 1.5apg, 2FGP: 53.9%, 3FGP: 37.3% and FT: 84.0% in 23 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Canadian and Nigerian. Ejim played for the Nigerian national team seven years ago.

Josh-Emmanuel Akognon

   #4. An experienced point guard Josh-Emmanuel Akognon (180-86, college: CS Fullerton, currently plays in China) was the major contributor in Henan's victory against the 11th-ranked Hebei Xianglan (1-4) 136-131 in the Chinese NBL (second division) on Sunday night. He recorded 38 points (!!!), 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Henan Shedianlaojiu (4-1) is placed second in the NBL. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. This year Akognon has very high stats. He averages: 32.2ppg, 2.4rpg, 5.8apg and 2.2spg. Akognon has both American and Nigerian nationalities. He used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2016.

   #5. Former international power forward Gani Lawal (206-88, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Philippines) was not able to secure a victory for one of league's weakest teams Meralco Bolts (1-2) in their last game. Despite Lawal's very good performance Meralco Bolts lost 95-110 in a derby game to the higher-ranked (#5) Ginebra Kings. He had a double-double by scoring 38 points and getting 20 rebounds (made all of his eight free throws) in 42 minutes. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Lawal has very impressive stats this year: 32.3ppg, 22.7rpg and 1.3spg in three games. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Lawal used to play for the Nigerian national team six years ago.

Tonye Jekiri

   #6. Center Tonye Jekiri (213-94, college: Miami, FL, currently plays in Turkey) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams one of league's weakest teams Gaziantep (17-11) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite his very good performance Gaziantep was defeated 89-77 in Istanbul by the higher-ranked Galatasaray (#4). Jekiri recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 11 rebounds. Jekiri has relatively good stats this season: 12.8ppg, 10.2rpg and 2.2apg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

   #7. International center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, agency: BeoBasket, college: Chicago St., currently plays in Puerto Rico) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Cariduros (15-18) crushing them 97-74 in the Puerto Rican BSN in Sunday night's game. Akindele recorded a double-double by scoring 19 points and getting 14 rebounds. He also added 3 assists and 3 blocks (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Capitanes de Arecibo (18-17) is placed fourth in the BSN. Akindele's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. This season Akindele has relatively solid stats: 11.2ppg, 10.3rpg, 2.2apg and 1.1bpg. He is also Nigerian national team player.

   #8. Power forward Talib Zanna (206-90, college: Pittsburgh, currently plays in Israel) faced previously mentioned Suleiman Braimoh in the Israeli Winner League last game. Zanna contributed to an Ironi Nes-Ziona's victory against the closely-ranked Hapoel Eilat (22-11) 95-84. He recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 12 rebounds. Zanna also added 3 assists. Zanna has reliable stats this season: 13.0ppg, 7.4rpg, 1.1apg and 1.2spg. He plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

Former international power forward Trevor Mbakwe (207-89, agency: Pensack Sports, college: Minnesota, currently plays in Greece) contributed to AEK's victory against the eighth-ranked Holargos (12-14) 88-75 in the Greek A1 in Saturday night's game. Mbakwe scored 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 16 minutes. AEK Athens (18-8) is placed third in the A1. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. This year Mbakwe's total stats are: 4.0ppg and 4.8rpg in five games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Despite Mbakwe played previously for the USA university national team, he is currently in the Nigerian national team roster.

   #10. Guard Obi Emegano (190-93, college: ORU, currently plays in France) contributed to an easy victory against the 11th-ranked SIG Strasbourg (13-20) crushing them 94-62 in the French Jeep ELITE ProA in Saturday night's game. Emegano recorded 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. JDA Dijon Bourgogne (23-11) is placed third in the Jeep ELITE ProA. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. Emegano has averaged so far 8.1ppg and 2.4rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

   #11. Former international small forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo (199-92, currently plays in Greece) managed to help Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens in a victory against the closely-ranked Peristeri GS crushing them 91-68 in a derby game in the Greek A1 in Wednesday night's game. Antetokounmpo recorded only 2 points in 5 minutes on the court. Antetokounmpo has averaged so far 4.9ppg and 3.3rpg in 19 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team three years ago.

   #12. International point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Poland) contributed to a Twarde Pierniki's victory against the closely-ranked Anwil 96-89 in the Polish EBL last Thursday. Umeh recorded only 4 points and added 4 assists. Umeh's stats this season are: 11.9ppg, 2.1rpg and 2.5apg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Umeh is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.

   #13. International power forward Lotanna Nwogbo (203-93, college: Longwood, currently plays in Argentina) was the main contributor in Atenas' victory against the fifth-ranked Estudiantes Olavarria 94-93 in the Argentinian La Liga Argentina (second division) in Thursday night's game. Nwogbo was the best player in that game. He scored 22 points, had 8 rebounds and made 2 blocks. This season Nwogbo has very high stats. He averages: 16.0ppg, 8.1rpg and 1.5bpg. Nwogbo holds both American and Nigerian passports. He is also Nigerian national team player.

   #14. International guard Ike Iroegbu (188-95, agency: Wasserman, college: WSU, currently plays in Lithuania) couldn't help Lietkabelis in their game against Neptunas in the Lithuanian LKL. Iroegbu cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 11 minutes. His team lost 75-88. Iroegbu's stats this year are: 13.5ppg, 3.5rpg and 3.3apg in 20 games. He plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #15. Former U22 international power forward Dinma Odiakosa (203-85, college: Illinois St., currently plays in France) couldn't help Sluc Nancy in their game against ADA Blois in the French ProB (second division). Odiakosa recorded 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 18 minutes. His team was edged 70-67. Odiakosa has averaged so far 6.6ppg and 5.9rpg in 34 games. He used to play for the Nigerian U22 national team fifteen years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Michael Ojo (216-C-93, college: FSU, currently plays in Serbia) led Crvena Zvezda to a victory over the fifth-ranked OKK Beograd (2-8) 93-78 in a derby game in the Serbian KLS on Saturday night. He was the best player in that game. Ojo scored 14 points in a mere 17 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. Crvena Zvezda MTS Beograd (10-0) is placed first in Group A. So far his team won all ten games in the Second Stage. There are only two games left until the end of the Second Stage. So now every game will be critical. This year Ojo's overall stats are: 8.8ppg and 5.4rpg in 10 games he played so far. Worth to mention Ojo played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball.

   #2. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-G/F-94, agency: Octagon Europe, currently plays in NBA) could not help the Milwaukee Bucks (60-22) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance the Milwaukee Bucks (60-22) were defeated 100-94 on the road by the Toronto Raptors. Antetokounmpo recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 4 assists and 3 blocks. Antetokounmpo is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his sixth year in Bucks' roster. Antetokounmpo has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 27.3ppg, 12.5rpg, 5.7apg, 1.6bpg and 1.2spg. Antetokounmpo has a dual citizenship: Greek and Nigerian.

   #3. Ike Joseph Udanoh (203-PF-89, college: Wayne St., MI, currently plays in Italy) was not able to help Sidigas AV (16-14) in their last game. Despite Udanoh's good performance Sidigas AV was badly defeated 92-76 in Milano by the leading Armani. He scored 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 32 minutes. This year Udanoh has relatively solid stats: 12.2ppg, 8.3rpg, 2.2apg and 1.1spg in 16 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #4. Chris Otule (211-C-90, college: Marquette, currently plays in China) was not able to secure a victory for Guizhou (3-1) in their last game. Despite Otule's very good performance Guizhou lost 103-111 in Changsha to the lower-ranked (#7) Hunan. He had a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 15 rebounds. Otule also added 8 blocks in 51 minutes. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Otule has very impressive stats this year: 25.0ppg, 13.8rpg and 3.5bpg in four games. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities.

   #5. Moses Kingsley (208-F-94, college: Arkansas, currently plays in Belgium) contributed to a Antwerp Giants' victory against the eighth-ranked Kangoeroes (12-24) 87-76 in the Belgian Euromillions League last Monday. Kingsley scored 8 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and made 3 blocks. Telenet Giants Antwerp (30-6) is placed first in the Euromillions League. It was his team's tenth consecutive victory in a row. Kingsley has averaged so far 7.8ppg and 4.9rpg. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #6. Danny Agbelese (206-F/C-90, also represented by Octagon Europe, college: Hampton, currently plays in Greece) couldn't help Holargos (12-14) in their last game. Despite Agbelese's good performance Holargos lost 75-88 in Athens to the higher-ranked (#3) AEK. He scored 13 points, had 5 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 29 minutes. Agbelese has averaged so far 8.3ppg, 7.0rpg and 1.8bpg in 29 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #7. Christian Nwogbo (201-F-91, another player represented by Octagon Europe, college: Cedarville, currently plays in France) helped SPO Rouen win their game against the eighth-ranked ADA Blois 97-78 in the French ProB (second division) last Thursday. Nwogbo recorded 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in 30 minutes. Nwogbo's stats this year are: 12.4ppg, 5.4rpg, 1.4apg and 1.2spg in 34 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #8. Michael Fakuade (201-F-89, college: Ill.-Springfield, currently plays in France) helped Entente Orleans 45 win their game against the tenth-ranked Poitiers 81-67 in the French ProB (second division) on Thursday night. Fakuade recorded 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Fakuade's stats this season are: 10.9ppg, 6.1rpg, 1.3apg and 1.2bpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #9. Nnanna Egwu (211-C-92, college: Illinois, currently plays in New Zealand) couldn't help Rangers (2-8) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Rangers lost 107-117 at home to the second-ranked Hawks. Egwu recorded 19 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks in 31 minutes. Egwu's stats this year are: 10.8ppg, 6.9rpg, 1.7apg, 1.9bpg and 1.5spg in 10 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #10. Experienced Robert Anshila (199-F-86, college: Ft.Hays State, currently plays in Australia) was the major contributor in Senators' victory against the sixth-ranked Lightning 90-78 in the Australian State League (second division) on Friday night. He recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 10 rebounds. Anshila also added 2 blocks. Anshila averaged so far 12.7ppg, 6.4rpg, 2.4apg and 1.1bpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Anshila attended previously one of camps at Eurobasket Summer League on his way to pro basketball.
