Here is the weekly review of the top performing Nigerian players, who play currently abroad.


Abdullahi Kuso

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international forward Abdullahi Kuso (206-84, college: Tallahassee CC, currently plays in Japan). He led Gunma to a victory over the sixth-ranked Aomori Watts (12-29) 83-78 in the Japanese B2 League last Sunday. Kuso was MVP of the game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 15 rebounds. Kuso also added and 3 steals. Gunma Crane Thunders (30-11) are placed first in East group. Kuso has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 15.7ppg, 10.7rpg, 3.3apg, 2.0bpg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 52.7% and FT: 70.6%. Kuso played for the Nigerian senior national team twelve years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Talib Zanna (206-90, college: Pittsburgh, currently plays in Israel). He was the main contributor in an Ironi Nes-Ziona's victory against the closely-ranked Beer Sheva (9-9) 90-78 in the Israeli Winner League on Sunday night. Zanna was the best player in that game. He scored 22 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 32 minutes. Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona (8-10) is placed seventh in the Winner League. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Zanna has relatively good stats this year: 11.4ppg, 7.4rpg and FT: 59.1% in five games he played so far. He is in the roster of the Nigerian senior national team.

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Melvin Ejim (201-91, college: Iowa St., currently plays in VTB United League). Ejim contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Khimki (12-5) 73-58 in the VTB United League in Friday night's game. He scored 8 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Unics Kazan (14-3) is placed second in the VTB United League. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Ejim's overall stats this season are: 7.3ppg, 6.1rpg, 1.1spg, 3FGP: 30.4% and FT: 81.3%. He has a dual citizenship: Canadian and Nigerian. Ejim played for the Nigerian national team seven years ago.

   #4. Point guard Josh-Emmanuel Akognon (180-86, college: CS Fullerton, currently plays in South Korea) was the major contributor in a Goyang Orions' victory against the closely-ranked DB Promy (22-24) 96-80 in the South Korean KBL last Sunday. He scored 22 points and added 3 assists in a mere 19 minutes. Goyang Orions (23-23) are placed fifth in the KBL. Akognon has very impressive stats this year: 16.1ppg and 1.7apg in seven games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Akognon used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2016.

   #5. Former international power forward Suleiman Braimoh (203-89, college: Rice, currently plays in Israel) could not help one of league's weakest teams Hapoel Eilat (11-7) in their last game. Despite his good performance Hapoel Eilat lost 70-82 on the road to the higher-ranked (#3) Hapoel Jerusalem. Braimoh was the second best scorer with 12 points. He also added 6 rebounds in 27 minutes. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. It's Braimoh's first season with the team. This year Braimoh has relatively solid stats: 15.0ppg, 5.4rpg, 1.8apg and 1.4spg in 14 games. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities. Braimoh used to play for the Nigerian national team three years ago.

   #6. Forward Al-Farouq Aminu (206-90, college: Wake Forest, currently plays in NBA) contributed to a Portland Trail Blazers' victory against the Brooklyn Nets (30-30) 113-99 in the NBA last Thursday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting 10 rebounds. The Portland Trail Blazers have a solid 35-23 record this season. Aminu is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Trail Blazers' roster. Aminu has reliable stats this season: 9.4ppg, 7.9rpg and 1.3apg. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Despite Aminu played previously for the USA U19 national team, he is also an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

International center Augustine Okosun (209-86, college: Keiser, currently plays in Africa Basketball League) helped his Egyptian team Somouha win their game against the closely-ranked ASB Mazembe (1-2) 78-65 in the Africa Basketball League on Friday night. Okosun was the top player that evening. He had a double-double by scoring 19 points and getting 12 rebounds in 23 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Somouha (3-0) is placed first in the Africa Basketball League. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. The Regular Season already ended in the Africa Basketball League. Okosun's stats this year are: 13.0ppg and 7.0rpg in three games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Okosun is also Nigerian national team player.

Guard Keith Omoerah (194-92, agency: Interperformances, college: Manitoba, currently plays in Ukraine) was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Mykolaiv in their game against Dnipro (16-8) in the Ukrainian Superleague. Despite his good performance last Sunday He scored 11 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 6 assists. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. Omoerah averaged so far 12.6ppg, 6.7rpg, 3.2apg and 1.3spg. He plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

International forward Emmanuel Omogbo (203-95, college: Colorado St., currently plays in Israel) helped Ironi Kiryat Ata win their game against one of league's weakest teams Ironi Ashkelon (8-12) 77-68 in the Israeli National League (second division) in Tuesday night's game. Omogbo had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 16 rebounds in 36 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. Elitzur Kiryat Ata (10-9) is placed sixth in the National League. They ended the series of four consecutive loses. Omogbo has very impressive stats this year: 16.0ppg and 17.5rpg in two games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Omogbo is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.

   #10. Power forward Lotanna Nwogbo (203-93, college: Longwood, currently plays in Argentina) helped Atenas win their game against the third-ranked Racing Chivilcoy (16-12) 80-77 in the Argentinian La Liga Argentina (second division) last Thursday. He scored 15 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 27 minutes; not bad, considering it's only Nwogbo's third season in pro basketball. Atenas de Patagones (13-14) is placed fourth in South - South group. Nwogbo has very impressive stats this year: 16.0ppg, 8.4rpg and 1.2bpg in 27 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Nwogbo is an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

   #11. International forward Jordan Nwora (203-98, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Louisville edge the Clemson University 56-55 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. He scored 11 points, had 4 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 31 minutes. Nwora has very impressive stats this year: 17.3ppg, 7.6rpg, 1.5apg and 1.1spg in 27 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Nwora plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #12. International guard Caleb Agada (193-94, agency: Blacktop Management, college: Ottawa, currently plays in Spain) helped Melilla Baloncesto win their game against the closely-ranked Oviedo CB 74-69 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) on Friday night. He recorded 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Agada averaged so far 10.6ppg, 6.1rpg, 2.0apg and 2.2spg. Despite he played previously for the Canadian university national team, Agada is currently in the Nigerian national team roster.

   #13. International power forward Alade Aminu (207-87, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Israel) managed to help Hapoel SP Tel-Aviv in a victory against the fifth-ranked Rishon 78-64 in the Israeli Winner League in Sunday night's game. He scored only 2 points, had 7 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 20 minutes. This year Aminu's overall stats are: 9.1ppg, 6.7rpg and 1.1bpg in 17 games. He is also Nigerian national team player.

   #14. Former international forward Andy Ogide (204-87, agency: HMS, college: Colorado St., currently plays in Italy) was not able to secure a victory for UCC Piacenza in their game against Consultinvest BO in the Italian Serie A2 (second division), despite his very good performance last Sunday. Ogide was the second best scorer with 14 points. He also added 4 rebounds in a mere 16 minutes. But his team was badly defeated by 19 points 92-73. Ogide has very impressive stats this year: 16.8ppg and 8.1rpg in 22 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2016.

   #15. International shooting guard Ikenna Mbamalu (191-91, college: La-Lafayette, currently plays in Chile) couldn't help Aleman in their game against Deportivo Valdivia in the Chilean Liga Nacional. Despite his very good performance on Saturday night Mbamalu was the second best scorer with 20 points. He also added 9 rebounds and dished 5 assists. This season Mbamalu has very high stats. He averages: 22.5ppg, 6.0rpg and 3.0apg. Mbamalu holds both American and Nigerian passports. He is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team. Mbamalu used to play for Lagos Warriors in Nigerian league.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-G/F-94, agency: Octagon Europe, currently plays in NBA) led Milwaukee Bucks to a 1-point victory over the Boston Celtics (37-22) 98-97 in the NBA in Thursday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Antetokounmpo had a double-double by scoring 30 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 6 assists and 2 blocks in 37 minutes. The Milwaukee Bucks have a very solid 44-14 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. It's Antetokounmpo's sixth year with the team. Antetokounmpo has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 27.2ppg, 12.7rpg, 6.0apg, 1.4bpg and 1.4spg in 54 games he played so far. Antetokounmpo has a dual citizenship: Greek and Nigerian.

   #2. Micheal Eric (210-C-88, college: Temple, currently plays in Euroleague) could not help Darussafaka (3-20) in their last game on Friday. Despite his good performance the bottom-ranked Darussafaka was crushed 97-75 in a derby game by the leading Fenerbahce. Eric was the top scorer with 14 points. He also added 6 rebounds. This season Eric has relatively solid stats: 11.5ppg and 5.1rpg.

   #3. Experienced Kieron Achara (208-F-83, agency: Two Points, college: Duquesne, currently plays in United Kingdom) was not able to help Glasgow Rocks in their game against Newcastle Eagles (13-7) in the British BBL. Despite his very good performance in Friday night's game He recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 11 rebounds. Achara has been at the team for five years. Achara averaged so far 11.5ppg, 6.0rpg, 1.9apg and 1.2bpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Scottish and Nigerian.

   #4. David Kadiri (200-F-95, college: Buffalo, currently plays in Serbia) was not able to secure a victory for one of league's weakest teams Sloboda Uzice (11-11) in their game against Tamis (12-10) in the Serbian KLS, despite his good performance last Tuesday. Kadiri scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in only 11 minutes. But Sloboda Uzice lost 88-95 at home to the higher-ranked (#6) Tamis. It was Sloboda Uzice's third consecutive loss in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This year Kadiri's overall stats are: 9.7ppg and 4.5rpg in 21 games. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities.

   #5. Chukwudiebere Maduabum (206-F-91, currently plays in Japan) couldn't help Yamagata (16-25) in their game against Bambitious Nara (12-28) in the Japanese B2 League. Despite his very good performance on Sunday night Maduabum was the second best scorer with 16 points. He also added 9 rebounds and made 3 blocks. Maduabum averaged so far 13.5ppg, 9.0rpg, 1.3apg and 2.5bpg.

   #6. Charles Bassey (211-C/F-0, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the W.Kentucky in their game against the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the NCAA, despite his very good performance in Saturday night's game. He had a double-double by scoring 23 points and getting 10 rebounds. Bassey also added 3 blocks in 36 minutes. But his team lost 60-68. Bassey averaged so far 14.9ppg, 10.0rpg and 2.4bpg in 27 games.

   #7. Aleksey Adediran (201-C-82, college: Binghamton, currently plays in Ukraine) couldn't help Mykolaiv in their game against Politekhnik in the Ukrainian Superleague, despite his good performance on Friday night. Adediran scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 32 minutes. But his team lost 81-86. This year Adediran's overall stats are: 9.4ppg and 5.9rpg in 21 games. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and Russian.

   #8. Martins Igbanu (203-F-97, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the Tulsa in their game against the Wichita State University in the NCAA. Despite his very good performance in Wednesday night's game Igbanu recorded 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Igbanu averaged so far 12.0ppg and 5.5rpg.

   #9. Chuba Ohams (203-F-97, is currently at the American university) led Fordham to a 3-point victory against the Rhode Island University 66-63 in the NCAA last Saturday. He scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 38 minutes. This year Ohams' overall stats are: 5.6ppg and 5.7rpg in 26 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #10. Maxie Esho (206-F/C-91, also represented by Two Points, college: Massachusetts, currently plays in ASEAN League) led his Indonesian team CLS Knights to a victory over the closely-ranked Mono Vampire 109-102 in the IBL on Saturday night. Esho was the top player that evening. He recorded a double-double by scoring 37 points and getting 13 rebounds. Esho also added 5 assists. Esho's overall stats this season are: 5.6ppg and 5.7rpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.
