Tanzania's Dar City shock top-ranked Petro de Luanda 88-82 in historic BAL quarterfinal upset- May 24, 2026Dar City Basketball Club pulled off the biggest upset of the 2026 Basketball Africa League season on Saturday, stunning top-ranked Petro de Luanda 88-82 in Game 1 of their quarterfinal series at the BK Arena to take a six-point aggregate lead into Sunday's decisive second leg. The Tanzanian side the first club from their country ever to reach the BAL playoffs spoiled the Angolan champions' return to Kigali, the city where Petro lifted their maiden BAL title in 2024 and reached the 2025 final. The former champions entered the playoffs as the tournament's highest-ranked team after going unbeaten through the Kalahari Conference in Pretoria, where they had hammered Dar City 100-75 in their group-stage meeting. This time was different. Dar City, who had qualified for the knockout rounds through a strong showing in Pretoria and carried the momentum of a historic campaign, came out with the defensive intensity and offensive execution that had been absent in their first encounter. The Tanzanian champions matched Petro's physicality, disrupted their half-court sets, and converted when it mattered most to build and protect a lead that the Angolan giants could not overcome. Daniel Utomi (198-SF-1997, college: USC) led the charge with 22 points, while Nisre Zouzoua (188-G-1996, college: Nevada, agency: Players Group) added 19 points for Dar City. Chasson Randle (188-G-1993, college: Stanford) replied with 18 points for Petro de Luanda.
The 88-82 scoreline means Petro must now win Game 2 on Sunday by more than six points to advance to the semifinals a tall order against a Dar City side brimming with confidence and riding the wave of what is already the greatest achievement in Tanzanian basketball history. "This is a proud moment not just for our club, but for Tanzania and East African basketball as a whole," a Dar City official had said before the series. Saturday's result exceeded even those lofty words. The other quarterfinal series also produced an upset, with ASC Ville de Dakar edging Al Ahly SC 93-90 on Friday, while RSSB Tigers took a commanding 95-72 lead over FUS Rabat. The Club Africain-Al Ahly Ly and Petro-Dar City second legs complete the quarterfinal picture on Sunday, with the semifinals to follow later in the week. |
