Uganda's League champions City Oilers on Friday night defeated Tanzania's JKT 85-56 to remain unbeaten in the inaugural Basketball African League games in Dar es Salaam. The win means City Oilers have qualified for the next round of the league qualifying tournament scheduled for November and December. In a tight game played at the National Indoor Stadium, City Oil survived an early scare as the Tanzanian side put up a major show at their home ground by leading in the first six minutes of the game 16-05. However, the City Oilers put their at together to lower the lead ensuring 14-19 points difference by end of the first quarter still in favour of the Tanzanian side. Three minutes into the second quarter, the teams played neck to neck before the City Oilers side started dominating the game to end the quarter with a 42-36 lead, thanks to a sloppy defense by the Tanzanian side. A more consistent play from the Oilers earned them a final 69-46 win at the end of the third quarter, as the JKT Side kept on trailing. City Oilers maintained the lead to win the day 85-56. Shooting guard Robinson Opong (190-G/F-89, college: Rogers St.) scored a game high 29 points and collected six rebounds, while Center Landry Ndikumana (198-F-95) added 14 points and 12 rebounds. Robinson Odoch said they were tough as a team even after their slow start. He says they faced one of the toughest opponents as they played in their home crowd. The win makes Oilers Oilers unbeaten in the tournament after a win against Ethiopia's Hawassa Basketball Club and Dynamos of Burundi. City Oilers Coach Mandy Juruni says he is happy that they have qualified for the next round following their three wins.
