WBNL Round 5: Rhinos lose to Soweto P.- May 24, 2023

Soweto P. - M.Rhinos 54-39 The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of Rhinos (0-1) in Johannesburg on Saturday night. Visitors were defeated by Soweto P. (2-0) 54-39. Soweto P. held Rhinos to an opponent 20.0 percent shooting from the field compared to 28.2 percent accuracy of the winners. Soweto P. forced 19 Rhinos turnovers. Siphiwe Chitlango stepped up with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals for the winners and Danja Lunnemann chipped in 14 points and 8 rebounds. Rachel Ngona responded with 12 points and 9 rebounds and Nocwaka Luke produced a double-double by scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Soweto P. maintains first place with 2-0 record. Rhinos at the other side still closes the standings with one game lost. Soweto P. are looking forward to face Tshwane S. (#4) on the road in the next round. Rhinos will play against the league's second-placed WC Mountaineers and hope to get finally their first victory. (3-0) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed fifth ranked NW Eagles (0-4) in Johannesburg 75-39. Egoli M. dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to NW Eagles' 34. Egoli M. forced 27 NW Eagles turnovers and outrebounded them 53-38 including 21 on the offensive glass. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists comparing to just 6 passes made by NW Eagles' players. Egoli M. brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. Katia Matlombe nailed a double-double by scoring 13 points and 12 rebounds for the winning side and Zimbabwean Maria Mutengo (-2001) accounted for 12 points and 8 rebounds. Sphila Mdlolo came up with 12 points and 7 rebounds and Kgothatso Wesinyane added 8 points and 6 rebounds respectively for NW Eagles in the defeat. Egoli M. have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 3-0 record. NW Eagles at the other side still closes the standings with four games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
