African Basketball Zone VI Cup of Nations for Men and Women

A contingent of Africas best Male and Female basketball players are set to hit our shores with the highest quality of Basketball that South Africa has ever seen with the kick off of the much anticipated FIBA Zone VI Africa qualifiers on 8th 15th January 2011.

This week-long competition that will take place at the University of Pretoria (TUKS) Indoor Sports Arena. This is one of South Africas premiere indoor sporting facilities- boasting wooden floors, brand new electronic scoreboards, 24-second shot clocks, and the best FIBA-accredited refs on the continent.

The participating countries include:

South Africa
Malawi
Zimbabwe
Zambia
Botswana
Mozambique

This tournament is of great importance and is sure to bring the best out of all the participating countries, with the winner of the tournament then qualifying to represent the Zone 6 region at the Afro Basket and the All-Africa games.

To add to the flavor, spectators will be able to witness Africas most successful basketball nation, Angola, with 10 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in their last 16 appearances in the FIBA Africa Championship tournaments. With Angola automatically qualifying for the tournaments by virtue of being reigning champions, South Africas biggest threat would be Mozambique, who have improved dramatically with the recent inception of their professional league.


At this point in time it is just great to have things moving forward with the sport of basketball. It is a great honour for us to be able to host this prestigious event, Head of LOC for the event, Mr Cabby Magongwa said in Pretoria.

The event will be well run and highly competitive, This is just the beginning for basketball in 2011!
