APR Women failed to defend their trophy after their archrivals Rwanda Energy Group dominated them with a 79-52 win to with the 2025 Rwanda Cup on Wednesday, September 10, at Petit Stade. The victory means that Julian Martinez’s side has achieved a double of major trophies played in domestic basketball, having also won the women’s basketball league championship which they took away from Kepler after seven games of finals series. REG won the first two quarters 16-13 and 31-6, to go into half-time with a 47-19 convincing lead which APR failed to turn around in the second quarter. From the break, REG maintain their control of the game, winning the third quarter 21-20 to make matters worse for their rival club whose players looked lost. They got it too late to make a comeback despite claiming the fourth quarter 13-11 which was not enough to change the result as REG finished the campaign as winners. REG shooting guard Gloriose Byukusenge (168-SG-2001) was the final’s highest scorer with 14 points, while Akon Rose Paul Macuei and Kadidia Maiga (185-PF-1997) also scored in double digits with 12 and 11 points respectively. Also, on Saturday, September 6, REG crowned 2025 champions of the Rwanda women basketball league after beating Kepler in a thrilling 54-51 Game 7 victory. REG will represent Rwanda at the 2025 Africa Zone Five Club Championship.
