KCB Lions see off KPA to clinch third title in a row - Dec 17, 2009 KCB Lions have won the third straight national title. They held off Kenya Port Authority 97:91 in the second game of the best-of-three championship series. The teams clashed at the Nyayo National Stadium. The Lions enjoyed a 1-0 advantage after a 77:67 win in Mombasa. KCB got to a storming start taking a 14:4 lead early on. The Lions maintained the lead and posted a 20:9 lead ten minutes into the game. Dennis Opiyo (198-C-79) helped the Lions stretch the gap at 35:17 mark in the second frame. But KPA bounced back late in the half. Mike Opel ensured a rally that saw KPA got within four points at halftime 40:44. Dan Okwiri (183-G-81) and Fred Omondi pushed Kenya Port Authority in charge at the start of the third quarter. Not for long though. The Lions quickly erased the deficit and grabbed a 67:59 lead into the fourth period. Moreover Mike Opel fouled out narrowing KPA offensive options. KPA came up with some heroics late in the game. They cut the distance to just a single point but KCB survived the threat. Victor Odendo (189-G) knocked down several crucial jumper and the Lions ran away for the victory. Victor Odendo finished with game-high 35 points for the Lions. Tobias Onyango (G-80) added 27 points and was named the MVP. Dennis Opiyo had 16 points in the winning effort. Musa Odari (188-G-86) responded with 19 points for KPA. Dan Okwiri had 17 points in the loss. |
