Braves of Customs and Ghana Police Service have emerged winners of the 2019 Accra Basketball League (ABL) Men's Division I and Women's Division respectively. Braves beat Adenta Leopards 60-56 in Game 3 of the Finals Series to win the Division.
Customs win completed a remarkable comeback from a 57-65 loss in Game One to Adenta to score an 82-69win in Game 2 to set up the deciding win. The team becomes the first to win the Benjamin Baafi Trophy.
Suleman Abubakar of Braves was named the Most Valuable Player in the Men's Division after averaging 3.3 blocks per game. Abubakar's pair of jump shots on consecutive possessions put Braves up 44-42 to end the third quarter.
The game was tied multiple times in the fourth quarter as Kontor Appiah and Thomas Amedeku each scored a three pointer while Mutaleeb Alhassan bagged two shots from three point range. With both teams in foul trouble, free throw attempts were frequent in the quarter.
Braves veteran Guards Hashim Brimah and Baniba Dodzi scored free throws to seal the win. In the Women's Division, Ghana Police Service successfully defended its title by sweeping the finals series against Braves.
Police beat Braves 80-59 in Game 2 with Queen-Eze Dadzie leading the way with 25 points. Customs Forward Matilda Gordon was named Most Valuable Player in the division.
