The Basketball Africa League (BAL) Sahara Conference tipped off in thrilling fashion as Petro de Luanda made an emphatic statement, overpowering Kriol Stars of Cape Verde with a dominant 103-74 victory. Petro showcased their championship pedigree from the opening whistle, racing to a commanding 10-point lead despite facing fierce defensive pressure from both sides. Kriol Stars struggled to find their rhythm early, managing to score their first basket nearly five minutes into the first quarter. By the end of the opening period, Petro had built a comfortable 24-14 advantage, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. Despite a spirited second-quarter push from Kriol Stars that reduced the deficit to 15 points, Petro’s depth and firepower proved overwhelming. In the second half, Kriol Stars’ Anderson Correia (195-SG-1997) injected life into his team’s offense with a fiery performance, dropping an impressive 14 points and attacking the rim with authority. Richaud Pack (192-G-1992, college: Maryland) also provided a strong contribution, adding 17 points to Kriol’s tally. However, it was clear that their efforts would not be enough to tame the Petro onslaught. Petro de Luanda elevated their offensive output in the second half, raining down three-pointers and converting with clinical efficiency around the rim. Their ball movement and offensive versatility were too much for Kriol to contain. An impressive six Petro players finished in double figures, underlining the team’s depth and unselfish play. Leading the charge was Aboubacar Gakou (201-F-1997), who delivered a standout performance with 19 points. Center Yannick Moreira asserted his dominance in the paint with 16 points, while veteran floor general Solo Diabate (183-PG-1987, agency: Interperformances) showcased his experience and composure, contributing 12 points. This balanced scoring effort ensured that Petro never relinquished control of the contest. Petro de Luanda secured a crucial early win with this victory and sent a strong message to the rest of the Sahara Conference. Their hopes of repeating as BAL champions remain firmly alive, and if this opening performance is any indication, Petro are set to be a major force throughout the tournament. As the Sahara Conference heats up, Petro de Luanda’s blend of experience, talent, and ruthless execution will be brutal for any contender to match. Kriol Stars, meanwhile, will look to regroup quickly as the competition intensifies.
