Cape Verde claimed the first-ever World Cup win as they defeated Venezuela today. Betinho Gomes (202-SG-1985) scored 22 points to lead the African side to 1-1 record in Group F action.
Venezuela looked poised to clinch their first win at the tournament after their massive 23-9 run in the second period that put them up by 13 points at halftime 46-33. But Cape Verde refused to give up. They knocked down 26 points in the third period to pull within 7 points. Cape Verde then stunned their opponents with a strong 22-9 rally in the fourth frame to snatch a historic win at the end. Williams Tavares (198-G-1995, college: Fordham) notched 20 points, while Ivan Almeida (198-SF-1989, college: Stonehill) added 18 points for Cape Verde. David Cubillan (181-PG-1987, college: Marquette) answered with 15 points, while Jhornan Zamora (196-G/F-1989) finished with 14 points Venezuela.
