Cape Verde shock Angola in overtime thriller at the AfroBasket 2021. Cape Verde beat eleven-time African champions Angola 77-71.
Both teams nailed 14 points each in the opening period, while Angola took an 8-point lead at the halftime with a 20-12 run. Cape Verde meanwhile dominated the rest of the game. They won the third period 23-21 and then tied it all with a 17-11 rally in the fourth quarter. Later in overtime they posted a final 11-5 run to come with the biggest upset so far.
Walter Tavares (220-C-92) top-scored for the winners with 20 points and Fidel Mendonca (191-F-84) netted 14. Carlos Morais (200-G-85, agency: Duran International) replied with 21 points in a loss and Jilson Bango (208-C-99) had 13.
