Civil Defenders Basketball Club from Nigeria has qualified to the quarterfinals of the 2019 Africa Basketball League (AfroLeague). The team secured the final spot at the ELITE 8 stage thanks to a 62-58 win over fellow West African side Elan Sprotif from Benin who doubled as host for Group B games. Games played in the Group this past weekend in Cotonou represented the final round of fixtures at the group stage of the continental competition. Seven teams had booked places in the next stage of this year's tournament and the winner of the Sportif-Defenders clash was bound to join that list. Defenders Forward Victor Okpe led his side with a 16 point, 16 rebound double double and added four assists in the crucial win. The win put the Nigerian side second in the Group behind Tunisian side ES Rades who qualified in first place with three wins in three games. Civil Defenders had two wins in three games. Rades beat BC Terreur from Democratic Republic of Congo 69-52 in the final game. Rades lost to AS Sale from Morocco in the last final.
