Tigers make history: Randall's 33 caps stunning comeback as RSSB win first BAL title for Rwanda-May 31, 2026
The RSSB Tigers are champions of Africa. In front of a delirious home crowd at the BK Arena on Sunday, the Tigers overcame a catastrophic start to beat Petro de Luanda 90-88, becoming the first Rwandan team ever to win the Basketball Africa League title.
It looked like a rout in the making. Petro raced to a 7-0 lead, forcing coach Henry Mwinuka to burn a timeout barely two minutes in, and the Angolan champions piled on to build a 20-0 advantage before RSSB had even scored. Craig Randall II (193-SG-1996, college: UT Martin) the tournament's leading scorer missed his first four shots before finally getting the Tigers on the board with a layup. By the end of the first quarter, RSSB trailed 27-16 and the 2024 BAL champions looked firmly in control.
Then came one of the great comebacks in BAL Final history. Randall caught fire in the second quarter, drilling a three to cut it to 28-19, then another to make it 28-22, sending the BK Arena into a frenzy. When he buried a third triple to give the Tigers their first lead at 37-35, the packed arena erupted into chants and dancing. Petro coach Sergio Valdeomillos called a timeout to stem the tide, but the momentum had shifted irreversibly. RSSB took a 42-37 lead into halftime and never relinquished it.
Randall finished with a game-high 33 points despite a grueling 8-of-40 shooting night, playing all 40 minutes and willing his team to the title. It was the Tigers' second victory over Petro this season.
For Petro, Aboubacar Gakou (201-F-1997) was magnificent with 28 points, but his foul trouble proved pivotal when he picked up his third foul with 20 points already on the board, Valdeomillos was forced to sit him, and the Angolans lost their offensive engine at a critical juncture. He fouled out in the fourth quarter. Petro's 13 turnovers, excessive fouling, and a rotating defense that had served them so well all season faltered in the biggest game of all.
Randall capped his historic campaign by being named 2026 BAL Most Valuable Player. The 30-year-old shooting guard led the league in scoring at 36 points per game across 38 minutes a night, and headlined the All-BAL First Team alongside teammate Mangok Mathiang (208-C-1992, college: Louisville), Petro's Childe Dundao (169-PG-1998), and Al Ahly Ly duo Donovan Williams (198-G-2001, college: UNLV) and Majok Deng (205-F-1993, college: ULM).
