Special Afrobasket '07: Menjour thumb-up Angola - Aug.
24, 2007
Tunisian basketball technocrat, Abdelraouf Menjour, FIBA Africa
President of Competition Commission looked back with nostalgia at the 24th FIBA
Africa Championship being hosted by Angola.
The FIBA Africa bigwig says, though this is the first time the
championship is played by 16-nations, there is no doubt that the host has done
perfectly well in terms of organisation among others.
Menjour advised other would-be host of the continent's flagship
competition to borrow a leaf from Angola who provided five (Luanda, Benguela,
Lubango, Huambo and Cabinda) venues for the championship which he considered a
model in the history of the competition in Africa.
He, however, urged the basketball federations of Nigeria, Senegal and Mali whom
he consider as some of the continent's power-house who were bundled out of the
championship at the group and quarter-finals stage to do more in order to raise
the level of competitiveness in future championship.
He also agreed that Angola can host the FIBA World Championship
if it met all requirement of the world governing body as decision for which
country host the rest of the world does not rest with FIBA Africa who will
definitely throw its weight behind such bid.
“It is the first time we are having 16 countries in the championship with five
cities as venues, to me it is a good development for the game in Africa.
“I hope other countries will take a cue from what Angola did by developing
more facilities instead of having to play all the 48 matches in one venue and
city, Angola has succeeded in taking basketball to its interior provinces/cities
and we can't wait to witness the resultant effect of that.
“The Championship threw up lots of surprises where some big
teams like Nigeria, Senegal and Mali did not finish among the top-four.
“It is a challenge to these countries federation to be alive to their
responsibilities by preparing their team very well ahead major championship such
as the Afrobasket, because the so called minors have braced up and are ready to
give the stronger nations some surprises.
“Though the development is not that good for Africa basketball because it
means Angola have little or no opposition to contend with unlike in the past
where it will play against countries like Senegal or Nigeria in either the
semi-finals or finals.
“Yes, I think Angola can host the World Championship and will
receive full backing of FIBA Africa, but will have to work extra hard to met the
conditions that the world body will set for would-be host of such big tournament
as the world championship.

Special Afrobasket '07: Central Africa no match for
Angola - Aug. 21, 2007
Reigning Africa champion, Angola Tuesday showed the stuff it is
made up of when it ran ring round hapless Central Africa Republic in the last
quarter-final match of the 24th FIBA Africa Championship at the magnificent
Cidadela gymnasium in Luanda.
The match had started with a very high score in the first quarter with Angola
winning 36-29 points while the game was slowed down a little in the second
quarter with the Angolan still in the lead taking the quarter 17-10, the third
quarter was no difference as the Angolan won game through perfect distribution
of ball with an 11-06 points victory while the fourth quarter ends 14-06 in
favour of the African champion thus providing an easy semi-final pairing for
them against Nigeria conqueror Cape Verde on Thursday.
The question on the lips of most people that watched the game
against the hapless Central African side is that “who will tame Angola in
Africa basketballâ€Â
And just as the question was about simmering down another onlooker gave an
answer, a country that is ready to support its basketball federation and a
federation will be alike to its responsibility that must come with clean hand in
handling issues that bothers on the development and improvement of the game in
its country and zone.
A federation where corruption and ineptitude will be done away with, one who
does not harbour grudges and those not condone sycophancy, that, only will stop
the dominance of Angola who has elevate basketball to the status of religion
that both small and old adore.

Special Afrobasket '07: Amadou Fall absolve players
of Senegal woe - Aug. 21, 2007
The General Manager of the Senegalese national team to the 2007
African Cup of Nations taking place in Angola and Dallas Mavericks director of
scouting, Amadou Galo Fall says the players have no hand in the ouster of the
Lions from the continent's apex championship.
Speaking in an exclusive chat with www.fibaafrica.com in Luanda,
Angola Tuesday, shortly before he left for Benguela to give the players some
moral support in their classification match against South Africa, says the early
exit from group-C should serve as a sort of wake-up call to Senegalese
basketball authority whom he blamed for not taking the development of the game
seriously after the triumph of 1997 when they beat Nigeria to lift the trophy on
home ground.
He described the exit of one of Africa basketball power-house at
the group stage as very painful to him and the players.
According to the Mavericks high ranking official says the team knows they are
playing in a tough group which comprises of Mali, Egypt and Cote d'Ivoire but
says the least they expected from the group is to come second and not to be
bundled out at the group stage after finishing second in the 2005 edition held
in Algeria.
“We have high hope of doing well in this championship and so we are
disappointed in our fall here.
“We know that our group in Lubango was going to be tough because of the teams
in the group which comprises of us, Mali, Egypt and Cote d'Ivoire, but the
absence of strong leadership on the part of those administering the game in
Senegal cost us this early exit.
“Preparation was delayed more than necessary, for example we plan to commence
training early June but did not start until mid-July part of these poor planning
makes us not to be with our coach Sam Vincent who joined us in Italy during our
preparation but had to go back to his base in the United States of America.
Fall, however, gave a ray of hope for the rediscovery of his
country basketball which according to him enjoyed so much support from the fans.
The way forward for the present state of our basketball is for us to have people
who are passionate about the game not just those who want to occupy position.
We must embark on soul searching in order to correct the present rots in our
basketball, because basketball is a team game and if we must achieve great
success we must work as a team.

Among the top contenders for the sole automatic ticket are
reigning Africa champion, Angola, 2005 2nd runner-up Nigeria and 2005 runner-up

responsibilities of running the sport in the West African country.
The Africa Zone-2 top nation with array of tested players in the
world most glamorous league, the American National Basketball Association
league, The NBA, America Colleges and Europe like Mali fell to Cote d'Ivoire and
