Guinea conquered their first ever U16 African title. They prevailed against Egypt in the exciting championship game today. Karanmadi Gassama (2007) posted 25 points to lead the champions. Egypt sank 28 points in the second period to post a 48-44 halftime lead. Egypt stretched the lead to 11 points heading into the fourth period. But Guinea responded with a massive 30-11 rally in the final stanza to seal the title. Nour Toure (2008) recorded 22 points for the winners. Ali Assran (202-F-2007) answered with 17 points and 9 rebounds for Egypt.
3-4 Place
Angola - Mali 56-63
Mali
outscored Angola to step onto the pedestal in Monastir. Mali grabbed a
comfortable 35-21 halftime lead. Angola narrowed the deficit in the
second half but could not avoid the loss. Sambala Sissoko (2008) produced 18
points, while Mahamadou Diop (2007) added 14 points and 18 rebounds for Mali.
Graciano N'Thonia (2007) answered with 17 points and 7 rebounds for Angola.
5-6 Place
Rwanda - Ivory Coast 74-62
Rwanda
held off Ivory Coast to earn the fifth place at the championship. Ivory
Coast posted an 18-14 lead ten minutes into the game. But Rwanda
bounced back with a 25-14 run in the second term to take a 39-32
halftime lead. They followed with a 21-12 rally in the fourth term to
seal the victory. Sean Williams (2008) delivered 23 points, while Ivan Mugabo (2007)
added 15 points and 17 rebounds for Rwanda. Amadou Bah (2007) replied with 17
points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds for Ivory Coast.
7-8 Place
Morocco - Chad 74-75
Chad
nipped Morocco to clinch the 7th place in Tunisia. Ange Gogoto (2007) tallied
23 points and 24 rebounds to lead the charge. Chad accumulated a 39-26
halftime advantage. Morocco unloaded 28 points in the fourth stanza but
could not avoid the loss. Jassim El-Hasany (2008) netted 13 points for Morocco.
