Now everybody knows that when I have to swallow and say I was wrong it normally rains!
On Sunday at 1:30pm when the Kingdom Cavaliers vs Real Returners game was over I should have said Im sorry I was wrong to both Cavaliers women and Real Returners.
I was wrong that the Wonder Women Cavaliers cannot be talked about in the same breadth as basketball..
I was wrong that the Golden Girls Returners cannot be talked about in the same breadth as running basketball.
On Sunday my faith in womens basketball was restored as I watched the Wonder Women of Cavaliers battle the Golden Girls, Real Returners! And what an epic battle this turned out to be. From first whistle Cavaliers served intent that they were not just pretty faces but a team that came to win. But who would have thought Real Returners were going to be running come 39th minute of the game. But I guess I was not wise if I forgot that Returners Chipo Matsika, Jean Mkanda, Beauty Masenda and Chido Gutu were all ex-Zimbabwe National Team players of some repute. Susan Kamukai was in that dreaded Trackers team that ruled Zimbabwean womens basketball for ages. Even the injured Returners players Nobuhle Magava and Anna Mguni all ex-national team players and ex-Highlanders and Varsity Leopards. But Sue proved to be the joker in the pack as she top scored with 15 points and most of them from fastbreaks. Yes I said itfastbreak from Real Returners. Nuff said about the Returners. Lets talk about the best looking women in the leagueCavaliers. Five (5) 3 pointers in the last quarter as they refused to lie down dead. Eastern Lakers boss William Chimuchere was not there to see one of his own Victoria Muzamhindo throw 2 of those 3s. Coach Simba Moondog Nyamariwata (ex-GHS winning-most coach), your very own Sikhangezile Mutibiwa joined Vicky with her own two (2) 3-pointers. Then guess who hit the other 3 for Cavaliers, Chengetai Makawa. I bet her mom Carole never had any sleep being told 20 different version of how she calmly took and sank that 3. Every time Returners made a run, Cavaliers came down and threw a bomb. Eventually it was left to Returners Beauty Masenda to dribble the ball away with 6 seconds left after Mutibiwa had just thrown a 3 to bring Cavaliers within a point. When that game ended I saw Returners jump for joy but I saw too Cavaliers cry in pain. I knew I was wrong. I have a big mouth and all those ladies had just shut me up!
In the womens league Glen Norah Pistons came a cropper as the double defeats by Varsity Leopards and Stanbic Mavericks left them licking their wounds. Coach Forward Mandizadza will have to regroup the troops for the coming games as it should become easier.
