THE Under-18 national basketball girls team beat the regional powerhouse,
Angola, 58-44 in a second leg face off of the Zone Six Championships,
played at the Harare City Sports Centre, last week.
Rachel Makoni top scored for the hosts with the highest points of 21 after
her outstanding shooting in their first victory against Angola on Tuesday.
Angolas Mercian Fernandes top scored for her side, but her 11 points
were not enough to enforce a victory against the Zimbabwe schoolgirls.
Angola Basketball Union co-odinator, Lugigilo Vangue, commended Zimbabwes
fighting spirits saying, they are experienced than our team, we are still to gain
experience in our juniors.
National team coach, Ngoni Mukukula, was impressed by his charges performance
attributing great team work for their victory.
I have never seen young girls rallying towards the same goal with great
commitment like what they did today. They played according to plan, putting
everything we taught them during training at practice, applauded Mukukula, they
are a good pull of players.
Angola is one of the favorites in the region at basketball showcases. Their
schoolboys are the defending African Nations Champions and their senior women
side beat Zimbabwe at the regional showdown the country hosted last year.
Zimbabwes victory over such heavyweights will go into history books with the Raiderz
mentor declaring a beginning of a new chapter in the history of our basketball.
It has always been the norm that first place and second place is for Mozambique and
Angola, but now that we have beaten Angola we are set for number two and we take
it forward, said an optimistic Mukukula.
