NEW kids on the block, Stanbic Mavericks set a record last weekend
winning the finals of their debut perfomance in the 2007 National Basketball
Championships as defending champions Varsity Leopards fall to JBC in the
semi-finals.
Mavericks beat an equally competitive JBC 94-69 having trailed 17-18
in a blazing first quarter with Helena Nyagato shooting the most baskets
for 28points, powering her side to a magnificent victory.
Mavericks coach, Spencer Nyamadzawo told Eurobasket “the victory is
important to the team, it is a special record for us as this is our first
participation in the national championships having formed the club this
year.”
Key player, Regina Chisale was also outstanding scoring 18points for
the winning team as Fadzai Mabasa kept the action bouncing for JBC.
JBC who seemed comfortable with a 36-40 halftime scoreline lost control
of the game with Nyagato splitting through their defence in the third quarter
which ended 52-61.
The Nyamadzwo-coached side also gave basketball powerhouses, Varsity
Leopards their first defeat, in the second round of the Harare Basketball
League a fortnight ago.
