THE National women's basketball team went into camp in Kadoma today, for a
three-day All Africa Games preparation at Jameson School.
The 17-member-squad had their first camp in April, with preparations
for the continental games set to intensify with four other camps, before their
departure for Algeria in July.
National team manager, Bertha Faranisi said the offer to host the squad by Jameson school and the Mashonaland West Basketball Association, was a commendable initiative other provinces should take after.
“They have played a big part as a provincial association and other
provinces should also do the same in assisting the national team,” she said.
“We are trying to spread the camps around the country and make it as national
as possible; we aim to expose the ladies to different environments for them to
focus on their game.”
The squad, which is dominated by schoolgirls, was a selection of the
best players from the country¹s competitive basketball leagues, most of
them having played together at the Zone Six qualifiers hosted by the Zimbabwe
in February.
The national basketball team is currently the only team sport that qualified
for the All Africa Games set for Algiers, Algeria in two months time.
Meanwhile, emerging heavyweights, Stanbic Mavericks will on Sunday face
lightweights, the Glen Norah-based, Pistons in Dzivarasekwa without key
players, Margaret Magwaro and Regina Chisale who are in camp, after a
cancelled fixture with powerhouse Varsity Leopards.
The undefeated Varsity Leopards, who have provided the bulk of the
national team players, have been exempted from the week 22 fixtures.
