NBL Round 8: Derby game ends with UCU Canons' defeat of JKL Dolphins - May 27, 2019

Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Kampala: UCU Canons (#3) and JKL Dolphins (#5). JKL Dolphins were defeated at home 58-71 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. UCU Canons forced 22 JKL Dolphins turnovers. Forward David Kongor orchestrated the victory by scoring 12 points and 6 rebounds. Sudanese center Lual Titus (-98) contributed with 8 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Center Daniel Monoja (197-93) replied with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists for JKL Dolphins. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. UCU Canons have a solid three-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader. JKL Dolphins at the other side dropped to the fourth place with three games lost. They share the position with KIU Titans and Ndejje Angels. UCU Canons are looking forward to face Sharing Youth (#9) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. JKL Dolphins will have a break next round.
An interesting game for KIU Titans (6-3) which hosted in Kampala their close opponent Ndejje Angels (6-3). Third ranked KIU Titans managed to get a 8-point victory 67-59. Worth to mention a great performance of DR Congolese forward Denis Balungu (-95) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds and Micheal Bwanga who added 14 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. Guard Innocent Ochera (-97) responded with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Ndejje Angels' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. KIU Titans have an impressive six-game winning streak. Despite that victory KIU Titans went down to fourth position due to points difference, which they share with Ndejje Angels and JKL Dolphins. KIU Titans' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Kampala to the arena Our Saviour.
NBL top team - City Oilers (7-3) had no problems winning another game on Sunday. This time they crushed twelfth ranked Our Saviour (0-9) in Kampala 80-52. The winners were led by James Okello who had that evening a double-double by scoring 14 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists. Even 12 points and 7 rebounds by Elton Bakara did not help to save the game for Our Saviour. City Oilers have an impressive five-game winning streak. Despite that victory City Oilers went down to second position due to points difference. Loser Our Saviour still closes the standings with nine games lost. City Oilers' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Kampala to the arena KCCA Lions.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Kampala (2-6) and Falcons (2-7), which took place in Kampala. 7th ranked Kampala lost to tenth ranked Falcons in a road game 66-78. The best player for the winners was Andrew Opio who had a double-double by scoring 14 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Despite that victory Falcons went down to eleventh position due to points difference. Kampala at the other side dropped to the tenth place with six games lost. Falcons' next round opponent will be higher ranked Betway Power (#7) and it may be quite challenging game.

In the last game of round 8 KCCA Lions were beaten by Betway Power on the road 82-66.
The most impressive performance of 8th round was 8 points and 6 rebounds by Collin Kasujja of KIU Titans.



JKL Dolphins - UCU Canons 58-71

City Oilers - Our Saviour 80-52

NBL top team - City Oilers (7-3) had no problems winning another game on Sunday. This time they crushed twelfth ranked Our Saviour (0-9) in Kampala 80-52. City Oilers dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Our Saviour's 26. They outrebounded Our Saviour 61-34 including a 17-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. City Oilers looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by Our Saviour's players. The winners were led by the former international James Okello (194-90) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 14 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists and Nigerian power forward Chijioke Azolibe supported him with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Even 12 points and 7 rebounds by forward Elton Bakara (-96) did not help to save the game for Our Saviour. Forward Wilberforce Pirwoth (-95) added 11 points and 5 rebounds for the guests.
