UCU Lady Canons Sweep' KCCA Leopards to Clinch National League Championship - Dec 5, 2017

Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Canons were yesterday night crowned the 2017 Ladies' National Basketball League Champions. The Lady Canons reached this fate following their 54-62 victory against KCCA Leopards in game 4 of the finals to record a 'sweep' of 4-0 in the best of Seven finals series. The best of Seven Finals (Race to Four) saw UCU win game one 65-57 on November 26th, 70-60 (game two) on November 29th and 67-60 (game three) on December 2nd before completing the sweep with a victory in game four which guaranteed their Championship victory - rendering the remaining 3 fixtures irrelevant. 'Am over joyed,' started UCU's Coach Emmanuel Kiguyi. 'I have always believed in my side though I didn't expect a sweep. We had prepared ourselves mentally and the girls' character had strengthened for tougher times.' Speaking about his side's preparations before the Finals, Kiguyi added: 'Our major aim was to stop KCCA's guards because they have elite ones, and this is where our chances rested. 'They KCCA team asked us many questions especially in game three which was down to character and resillience but we had all the answers.' KCCA Leopards held the first quarter lead 14-13 before UCU retalliated to take a 26-27 lead at the long break and it was still a neck to neck affair after the third quarter with a 37-39 scoreline. Vilma Achieng (C-94), Ritah Immanishimwe, Judith Nansobya (170-G-86) and Sarah Ageno ran riot as they scored points in quick succession for UCU to pull away in the last quarter before sealing a 54-62 victory at the final buzzer. Speaking to ChimpReports after the match, the hard-done KCCA Coach Roger Sserunjogi said: 'It was a tight one but they came stronger, and as a University team they are always united, train regularly which is sometimes a challenge to us. 'I had told my girls that the 18-0 record means nothing, and the fact that we lacked Martha Soigi on the team, you could see that we were struggling.' KCCA Leopards star performer Sylvia 'Balotelli' Nakazibwe who did not complete the game after accumulating five personal fouls towards the last minutes of the fourth quarter, said: 'We lost four games that mattered but I believe that we did our very best. Its not ashaming to me because we were swept because I know many teams did not reach this far.' Achieng led the charts with 17 points and 21 rebounds to add on Nansobya and Immanishimwe efforts of 14 and 11 points respectively. KCCA Leopards' Cynthia Irakunda had 14 points and Larissa Katungeko collected a double double of 13 points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort. The Championship victory means that UCU Lady Canons have now taken the League title for the third consecutive season, a fate last achieved by Lady Bucks in the early 2000 - The Lady Bucks went on to win 5 in a row in 2002. 'We feel happy and we thank God for this great achievement, we did it with much fighting and it was game three which gave us belief,' said UCU's long serving player Judith 'Ayo' Nansobya.
