2023 World Cup: South Sudan add to the Philippines' woes, rally to comfortable win

South Sudan - Philippines 87-68

South Sudan opened their 2023 World Cup Classification Round action in a dominating manner as they rallied past hosting Philippines in Group M. Carlik Jones (185-PG-1997, college: Louisville) stepped up with 17 points, 14 assists and 9 rebounds to lead the African team.
South Sudan gained a firm grip on the game's pace in the first half. They sank 34 points in the first period to open a 17-point lead at the first break. South Sudan raced to an 18-point halftime advantage 51-33. Philippines finally managed to slow their opponents down in the third period. The hosts held South Sudan to 9 points in the period to pull within 10 points at the final break. But South Sudan bounced back with a 27-point effort in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Nuni Omot (206-SF-1994, college: Baylor) and Majok Deng (205-F-1993, college: ULM) provided 13 points each for the winners. Jordan Clarkson (196-G-1992, college: Missouri) answered with 24 points for Philippines. Dwight Ramos (193-G-1998, college: CPP) tossed in 20 points and collected 12 rebounds in the defeat.
