Two days of events marking the legacy of Nelson Mandela will be held in Toronto on Dec. 4 and 5, the fifth consecutive year that Giants of Africa - the not-for-profit founded by Toronto Raptors President Masai Ujiri - will pay homage to the late South African president and Nobel Peace Prize winner on the anniversary of his passing.

Mandela 100, an evening gala event presented by Tangerine will kicked off the festivities on Tuesday, Dec. 4th at Rebel Nightclub in Toronto. This tribute to Mandela will bring together Ujiri and a number of his friends from the sports, culture and entertainment world, including NBA commissioner Adam Silver, former Toronto Raptor Chris Bosh, soccer legend Didier Drogba, international top model Grace Mahary and many more. Grammy-nominated musician Jidenna and award-winning African recording artist Octopizzo will perform during the festivities.

'This year, 2018, has been monumental for Giants of Africa as we celebrated our 15th anniversary,' Ujiri said. 'Nelson Mandela has always been a personal hero of mine, and inspired me to first create the organization. With this being Mandela's centenary year, we needed to pay tribute to his legacy in a special way. We are bringing together people from Africa, Canada and around the world to honour his vision and celebrate the power of change. Giants of Africa is committed to using basketball as a tool to inspire and encourage youth to dream bigger and change the world around them.'

Mandela 100 will also honour a number of changemakers who are committed to aiding Africa youth in their quest to dream bigger. Award recipients include community activist, sociologist and journalist Dr. Auma Obama, Dr. Josephine Kulea - founder of the Samburu Girls Foundation - and NBA Africa Vice-President and Managing Director Amadou Gallo Fall.

On Wednesday, Dec 5th Giants of Africa will host a mentorship event with Ahmed Hussen, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. Hussen and Ujiri intend to harness the energy of their networks to connect with youth at risk and those facing barriers in their local communities, and hope to inspire young people in northwestern Toronto with a roster of incredible role models.

A mini basketball camp at MLSE LaunchPad will be held for 100 Toronto youth. The 42,000 sq. ft. space is a Sport For Development facility where youth facing barriers use sport to recognize and reach their potential. Members of the Giants of Africa and MLSE teams will conduct sessions both on and off the court emphasizing Mandela's legacy for change.

A tribute to Mandela's life will also be held in-game as the Raptors 905, the NBA G League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors, take on the Iowa Wolves at 11 a.m at Scotiabank Arena. Later in the evening, Mandela's legacy will be celebrated as the Raptors face the Philadelphia 76ers. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN and Sportsnet.

To mark the occasion, the Toronto Raptors team store, powered by Real Sports Apparel, will sell limited-edition Mandela 100 t-shirts. Immediately following the game, a ticketed reception will be held at Scotiabank Arena. Proceeds from the events will support Giants of Africa and The Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation was founded by the former president when he stood down from public service in 1999. The aim of the foundation is to contribute to the making of a just society by utilizing Mandela's legacy as a vital instrument for sharing memory, for growing it, and for engaging it in the pursuit of social cohesion.

Ujiri a native of Nigeria, love of basketball paved his way to becoming the first African-raised general manager for a major North American sports team. Founded in 2003, Giants of Africa leverages basketball as a tool for young boys and girls to Dream Big, and visualize opportunities for their future in Africa and around the world.
