Alpha Bangura (197-F/G-80, college: St.John's) might be the most talented player out of Sierra Leone....he is also the only professional player known from the country of the diamonds so far.

Alpha, who attended Monmouth University in his freshman-year, was the Northeast Conference Newcomer of the Year, leading the team in scoring (18.0 ppg) and rebounding (5.5) before leaving for St.John's University in New York.As a sophmore, he averaged 6.4 ppg and 2.6 rpg for the Red Storm and as a junior he recorded 5.6 ppg and 2.2 rpg before leaving the school for a professional career in basketball. He was not drafted in the NBA's 2002 Draft but by the Fayetteville Patriots(NBDL) and played for the Brooklyn Kings (USBL) in 2003,managed to give them 13.3 ppg and 3.4 rpg off the bench. After spending two years in the NBDL (Charleston) and a short stint in the CBA , he signed with Benfica Lisboa in 2005 and was doing well overseas ,recording 19.2 ppg and 5.2 rpg.Played then for Margarita in Venzuela's LPB before attending the Summer League in California with the L.A. Clippers.

Moses Sonko (196-F-83), another outstanding player who fled to the USA during the war to settle down in Rhode Island (attended Classical HS) , had two solid seasons at Coastal Carolina in the NCAA , averaging 6.2 ppg and 6.5 ppg in his first two years on the school. He was voted to the BSC-All-Freshman Team and could be another pro player for Sierra Leone in the near future.Another player that attended college in the US is 5-10 guard Junior Kargbo who played basketball and american football at Gallaudet University two years ago. Also ,we want to mention Alex Kargbo (188-F-81, college: Santa Clara) of Santa Clara University, who might have Sierra Leonian roots thanks to his dad Mamudu Kargbo.Alex finished his basketball career 2004 with the Broncos ,averaging 1.9 ppg.
