Freetown Cannon Royals on Wednesday retained their Western Area Basketball championship crown after defeating YSC in the play-off final at the National Stadium basketball court in Freetown.
The Royals came from two quarters down to win the final quarter 56-54, and according to their veteran captain Trevor Turner (193-F-85), the victory was down to experience.
'We did retain our title because of experience,' he said. 'At the start of the match we were two quarters down but we were able to bounce back because of maturity. YSC is a good team with young players and they played well but we were able to prevail over them because we have lots of experience players.'
According to Turner, they are already planning to groom young players for next season as the current squad of veteran players might not be able to cope with the pace of the league next season.
Ola Robin-Coker, skipper of the YSC side, also admitted that they lost the title due to lack of experience but believed that was a learning process for them.
He said: 'We played well in the opening quarters but lost concentration in the final quarter and we lost our chance of winning the title back because they (Cannon Royals) won it from us last season.'
