Jeleel Akindele selected the top Nigerian playing abroad in last week's games - Dec 14, 2018

We bring you last week's top performances from Nigerians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced international center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, agency: BeoBasket, college: Chicago St., currently plays in Mexico). He led Fuerza Regia to a victory over the sixth-ranked Libertadores (6-10) 85-74 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Thursday night's game. Akindele was MVP of the game. He recorded 27 points (!!!), 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals in 33 minutes on the court. Fuerza Regia Monterrey (12-6) is placed second in North group. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Akindele has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 20.1ppg, 8.3rpg, 1.8apg, 2FGP: 67.6%(115-170) and FT: 75.4% in 16 games he played so far. Akindele is currently a member of the Nigerian senior national team.

Stan Okoye

   #2. Second place goes to an international swingman Stan Okoye (198-91, college: VMI, currently plays in Spain). He could not help Zaragoza (6-5) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Okoye's very good performance Zaragoza was defeated 86-78 at home by the much lower-ranked Blusens Monbus (#13). He was the top scorer with 20 points. Okoye also added 8 rebounds. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Okoye has relatively good stats this year: 12.4ppg, 3.6rpg, 2FGP: 44.9%, 3FGP: 43.5% and FT: 57.1%. He has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and American. Okoye is in the roster of the Nigerian senior national team.

Abdullahi Kuso

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Abdullahi Kuso (206-84, college: Tallahassee CC, currently plays in Japan). He was the main contributor in Gunma's victory against the sixth-ranked Aomori Watts (6-15) 75-57 in the Japanese B2 League on Saturday night. Kuso was the best player in that game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 17 rebounds. Kuso also added 4 assists and 3 blocks. Gunma Crane Thunders (13-8) are placed third in East group. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. It's Kuso's first season with the team. This year he has very high stats. Kuso averages: 15.7ppg, 11.9rpg, 3.4apg, 2.6bpg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 50.4% and FT: 69.4%. He played for the Nigerian national team eleven years ago.

   #4. Power forward Suleiman Braimoh (203-89, college: Rice, currently plays in Israel) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Maccabi Ashdod (4-4) 85-68 in the Israeli Winner League in Monday night's game. Braimoh was the top player that evening. He scored 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 25 minutes. Hapoel Eilat (6-3) is placed fifth in the Winner League. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. This year Braimoh has relatively solid stats: 13.0ppg, 6.4rpg, 1.2apg and 1.2bpg in five games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Braimoh used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2016.

   #5. Former international point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Poland) contributed to a Twarde Pierniki's victory against the league leader Stelmet Enea BC (8-2) 93-89 in the Polish EBL last Thursday. He scored 16 points and grabbed 4 rebounds (went 6 for 6 at the free throw line). It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Polski Cukier Torun (7-2) is placed fourth in the EBL. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Umeh has reliable stats this season: 10.3ppg and 3.0rpg. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities. Umeh used to play for the Nigerian national team two years ago.

   #6. Forward Al-Farouq Aminu (206-90, college: Wake Forest, currently plays in NBA) helped Portland Trail Blazers win their game against the Minnesota Timberwolves (13-15) 113-105 in the NBA on Saturday night. He scored 14 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 36 minutes. The Portland Trail Blazers have 15-13 record this season. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Aminu is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Trail Blazers' roster. Aminu's stats this season are: 9.4ppg and 8.2rpg in 28 games. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Despite Aminu played previously for the USA U19 national team, he is also an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

   #7. Former international power forward Gani Lawal (206-88, agency: Octagon Europe, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Japan) was not able to help Shiga L-Stars (4-17) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Lawal's very good performance the sixth-placed Shiga L-Stars (4-17) were edged 85-84 on their home court in Shiga by the higher-ranked San-en NeoPhoenix (#5) in the West group. He recorded a double-double by scoring 37 points and getting 14 rebounds. Lawal also added 2 blocks. This season Lawal has very high stats. He averages: 20.8ppg, 11.7rpg, 1.8apg and 1.6bpg. Lawal holds both American and Nigerian passports. He used to play for the Nigerian national team five years ago.

Obi Emegano

   #8. Guard Obi Emegano (190-93, college: ORU, currently plays in Basketball Champions League) was the major contributor in a JDA Dijon's victory against the closely-ranked CEZ Nymburk (2-6) 89-78 in the Basketball Champions League last Tuesday. He scored 12 points in 22 minutes. JDA Dijon Bourgogne (2-6) is placed seventh in the Basketball Champions League. It was JDA Dijon's first victory after six consecutive loses. This year Emegano's overall stats are: 9.0ppg and 3.0rpg in eight games. He plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

Former international power forward Ekpe Udoh (208-87, college: Baylor, currently plays in NBA) helped Utah Jazz win their game against the Houston Rockets (13-14) crushing them 118-91 in the NBA in Thursday night's game. Udoh scored 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 19 minutes. The Utah Jazz has 14-15 record this season. This year Udoh's total stats are: 1.9ppg and 1.2rpg in 19 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Udoh used to play for the Nigerian national team two years ago.

   #10. Forward Jordan Nwora (203-98, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to secure a victory for the Louisville in their last game. Despite his very good performance his team was edged 68-67 on their home court in Louisville by the Indiana University. Nwora had a double-double by scoring 24 points and getting 14 rebounds. He also added and 3 steals in 38 minutes. Nwora has very impressive stats this year: 18.2ppg, 7.8rpg, 1.4apg and 1.2spg in 10 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Nwora is an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

   #11. Former international small forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo (199-92, currently plays in Euroleague) couldn't help Panathinaikos in their game against Fenerbahce in the Euroleague. He scored only 4 points in 13 minutes. His team lost 69-81. Antetokounmpo has averaged so far 5.2ppg and 1.2rpg in 11 games. He used to play for the Nigerian national team two years ago.

   #12. International center Augustine Okosun (209-86, college: Keiser, currently plays in Bulgaria) helped Yambol win their game against the second-ranked Rilski 92-88 in the Bulgarian NBL last Saturday. Okosun was the top player that evening. He scored 18 points, had 8 rebounds and made 2 blocks. This season Okosun has very high stats. He averages: 15.4ppg, 6.0rpg and 1.3bpg. Okosun holds both American and Nigerian passports. He is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.

   #13. International guard Keith Omoerah (194-92, currently plays in Ukraine) helped Mykolaiv win their game against the closely-ranked Khimik 83-77 in the Ukrainian Superleague on Monday night. Omoerah scored 6 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. It was his first game for Mykolaiv this season. Omoerah is also Nigerian national team player.

   #14. International power forward Lotanna Nwogbo (203-93, college: Longwood, currently plays in Argentina) couldn't help Atenas (5-3) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his very good performance Atenas was defeated 76-61 on the road by the lower-ranked Progreso (#6) in the South - South group. Nwogbo recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 14 rebounds. Nwogbo averaged so far 14.9ppg, 8.2rpg and 1.1bpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Nwogbo plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #15. International shooting guard Ikenna Mbamalu (191-91, college: La-Lafayette, currently plays in Chile) helped Aleman edge the sixth-ranked Osorno Basquetbol 80-78 in the Chilean Liga Nacional on Sunday night. He was the top player that evening. Mbamalu recorded 37 points (!!!) and grabbed 6 rebounds. This season Mbamalu has very high stats. He averages: 19.9ppg, 5.0rpg and 2.6apg. Mbamalu holds both American and Nigerian passports. He is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team. Mbamalu used to play for Lagos Warriors in Nigerian league.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-G/F-94, agency: Octagon Europe, currently plays in NBA) could not help the Milwaukee Bucks (18-9) in their last game on Friday. Despite his very good performance the Milwaukee Bucks (18-9) were defeated 105-95 on the road by the Golden State Warriors. Antetokounmpo recorded a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 15 rebounds. He also added 5 assists and 2 blocks. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Antetokounmpo's sixth year with the team. Antetokounmpo has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 25.9ppg, 13.2rpg, 6.0apg, 1.3bpg and 1.4spg. Antetokounmpo has a dual citizenship: Greek and Nigerian.

   #2. Tonye Jekiri (213-C-94, college: Miami, FL, currently plays in Turkey) was the major contributor in Gaziantep's victory against the closely-ranked Acibadem (4-6) 65-63 in the Turkish BSL on Thursday night. He had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 23 rebounds. Jekiri also added 3 assists in 34 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. Gaziantep Basketbol (4-5) is placed sixth in the BSL. Jekiri has relatively good stats this year: 10.6ppg, 10.9rpg, 1.7apg and 1.2spg in nine games he played so far.

   #3. Micheal Eric (210-C-88, college: Temple, currently plays in Turkey) was not able to help Darussafaka (9-1) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Darussafaka lost 72-81 in a derby game to the lower-ranked (#5) Besiktas. Eric was the top scorer with 21 points. He also added 9 rebounds and 3 assists in 28 minutes. This year Eric has relatively solid stats: 14.8ppg and 6.1rpg in nine games.

   #4. Victor Oladipo (193-G-92, college: Indiana, currently plays in NBA) led Indiana Pacers to an easy victory against the Milwaukee Bucks (18-9) 113-97 in the NBA last Wednesday. Oladipo had a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 6 assists in 29 minutes. The Indiana Pacers have a solid 18-10 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Oladipo has very impressive stats this year: 20.9ppg, 6.8rpg, 4.8apg and 1.5spg in 17 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #5. Michael Ojo (216-C-93, college: Florida St., currently plays in EuroCup) contributed to an easy victory against the fifth-ranked Germani BR (4-5) crushing them 103-67 in the Eurocup on Wednesday night. He scored 8 points, had 4 rebounds and made 2 blocks. Crvena Zvezda MTS Beograd (4-5) is placed third in group A. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. They will play only one more game in the Eurocup Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Ojo's overall stats this season are: 7.2ppg, 4.3rpg and 1.2bpg. Worth to mention Ojo played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball.

   #6. Ike Joseph Udanoh (203-PF-89, college: Wayne St., MI, currently plays in Italy) was not able to secure a victory for MIA-RO Cantu (3-6) in their last game. Despite his good performance MIA-RO Cantu was crushed 101-74 at home by the leading Armani Milano. Udanoh had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 12 rebounds. He also added and 3 steals in 38 minutes. Udanoh's stats this year are: 14.1ppg, 10.2rpg, 3.8apg and 2.2spg in nine games. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities.

   #7. Experienced Aleksey Adediran (201-C-82, college: Binghamton, currently plays in Ukraine) led Mykolaiv to a victory against the closely-ranked Odessa 93-85 in the Ukrainian Superleague last Thursday. Adediran recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 11 rebounds. Adediran's overall stats this season are: 8.5ppg, 6.2rpg and 1.1apg. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and Russian.

   #8. Abdul-Malik Abu (203-F-95, college: NC State, currently plays in Croatia) couldn't help KK Vrijednosnice Osijek in their game against Split in the Croatian Premijer Liga, despite his very good performance on Sunday night. Abu had a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 10 rebounds in 29 minutes. But his team was edged 78-75. Abu has very impressive stats this year: 15.6ppg, 8.3rpg and 1.4apg in nine games.

   #9. Chukwudiebere Maduabum (206-F-91, currently plays in Japan) led Yamagata to a 3-point victory over the fourth-ranked Orange Vikings 86-83 in the Japanese B2 League in Sunday night's game. He was the top player that evening. Maduabum scored 26 points (!!!) and grabbed 8 rebounds. Maduabum averaged so far 12.6ppg, 9.0rpg, 1.3apg and 2.3bpg.

   #10. Semi Ojeleye (201-F-94, college: SMU, currently plays in NBA) contributed to an easy victory against the Chicago Bulls crushing them 133-77 in the NBA on Saturday night. Ojeleye scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Ojeleye's total stats this season are: 3.7ppg and 1.9rpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

NBA Academy Africa win stage 2 of European Youth International tournament in Hungary - 8 days ago
The NBA Academy Africa team participated in Stage 2 of the European Youth Basketball League international tournament hosted by Hungary from January 11-12. PATRICK ONWENU Arcos Albacete Basket (LEB Silver) strengthened their roster with addition of 25-year old American (has also Nigerian passport) forward Patrick Onwenu (198-101kg-93, college: Alcorn State). He played in the summer at Titanes Licey in LNB league in Dominican Republic. Onwenu managed to play in three leagues in two countries last year (!!!). In 6 LNB games he recorded 7.3ppg and 3.2rpg.
