Here is the weekly review of the top performing Nigerian players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced international center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, agency: BeoBasket, college: Chicago St., currently plays in Mexico). Akindele could not help Fuerza Regia (9-5) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance the second-placed Fuerza Regia (9-5) was defeated 94-89 at home by the second-ranked Aaguacateros in the North group. Akindele scored 18 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and made 2 blocks. It's Akindele's first season with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Akindele averages: 19.8ppg, 8.0rpg, 1.8apg, 2FGP: 69.1%(85-123) and FT: 76.4%. He is currently a member of the Nigerian senior national team.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo

   #2. Second place goes to former international small forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo (199-92, currently plays in Euroleague). He was not able to help Panathinaikos in their game against Anadolu Efes (7-2) in the Euroleague. Antetokounmpo recorded 8 points. Panathinaikos was badly defeated 78-62 on the road by the higher-ranked Anadolu Efes (#4). Antetokounmpo's overall stats this season are: 5.8ppg, 1.1rpg, 2FGP: 85.0%(17-20). He has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and Greek. Antetokounmpo played for the Nigerian national team in 2016.

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Alade Aminu (207-87, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Israel). He led Hapoel Tel-Aviv to a victory over the closely-ranked Maccabi Rishon (2-4) crushing them 85-62 in the Israeli Winner League last Monday. Aminu was MVP of the game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 13 rebounds. Hapoel SP Tel-Aviv (2-5) is placed tenth in the Winner League. They ended the series of five consecutive loses. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Aminu has relatively good stats this season: 13.1ppg, 7.0rpg, 1.1bpg, 2FGP: 55.6%(35-63) and FT: 88.0%. He is also a member of the Nigerian senior national team.

Forward Abdullahi Kuso (206-84, college: Tallahassee CC, currently plays in Japan) contributed to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked Bambitious Nara (3-13) crushing them 86-61 in the Japanese B2 League on Sunday night. Kuso had a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 21 rebounds. He also added 3 assists and 3 blocks in 37 minutes. Gunma Crane Thunders (9-8) are placed third in East group. This year Kuso has relatively solid stats: 14.4ppg, 11.6rpg, 2.7apg, 2.6bpg and 1.3spg in 16 games he played so far. He used to play for the Nigerian national team back in 2007.

Former international power forward Suleiman Braimoh (203-89, college: Rice, currently plays in Israel) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Hapoel Jerusalem (4-2) 99-83 in the Israeli Winner League last Saturday. He recorded 13 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks in 21 minutes. Hapoel Eilat (4-3) is placed fifth in the Winner League. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Braimoh has reliable stats this year: 13.0ppg, 5.0rpg, 1.7apg and 1.7bpg in three games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Braimoh used to play for the Nigerian national team two years ago.

Power forward Gani Lawal (206-88, agency: Octagon Europe, college: Georgia Tech, currently plays in Japan) was the main contributor in a Shiga L-Stars' victory against the fifth-ranked San-en NeoPhoenix (7-10) 81-75 in the Japanese B League on Saturday night. He was the best player in that game. Lawal recorded a double-double by scoring 30 points and getting 13 rebounds. Shiga Lakestars (4-13) are placed fifth in West group. This season Lawal has very high stats. He averages: 20.4ppg, 11.8rpg, 1.9apg and 1.6bpg. Lawal has both American and Nigerian nationalities. He is a former international player as he played for the Nigerian senior team five years ago.

Former international point guard Michael Umeh (188-84, college: UNLV, currently plays in Poland) contributed to an easy victory against the 14th-ranked Miasto Szkla (1-6) crushing them 95-70 in the Polish EBL last Saturday. Umeh recorded 10 points. It was his first game for Twarde Pierniki this season. His team is placed third in the EBL. Umeh also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. He used to play for the Nigerian national team two years ago.

Forward Al-Farouq Aminu (206-90, college: Wake Forest, currently plays in NBA) contributed to a Portland Trail Blazers' victory against the Washington Wizards (6-11) 119-109 in the NBA in Sunday night's game. Aminu recorded 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. The Portland Trail Blazers have a solid 12-6 record this season. Aminu is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Trail Blazers' roster. He averaged so far 8.4ppg and 8.4rpg. Aminu holds both American and Nigerian passports. Despite he played previously for the USA U19 national team, Aminu is currently in the Nigerian national team roster.

Former international center Ekenechukwu Ibekwe (207-85, college: Maryland, currently plays in France) helped Levallois edge the 11th-ranked Monaco (5-5) 89-87 in the French ProA on Saturday night. He recorded 6 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks in 16 minutes. Levallois Metropolitans (7-3) is placed second in the ProA. This year Ibekwe's overall stats are: 5.9ppg, 3.9rpg and 1.1spg in seven games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Ibekwe used to play for the Nigerian national team two years ago.

He recorded 6 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. JDA Dijon (#8) was defeated 86-72 in Jerusalem by the leading Hapoel in the group C of Basketball Champions League. It was JDA Dijon's sixth consecutive loss in a row. Emegano's total stats this season are: 8.6ppg and 3.3rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Nigerian National Team roster.

International swingman Stan Okoye (198-91, college: VMI, currently plays in Spain) helped Zaragoza win their game against the 15th-ranked Leche Rio Breogan 86-82 in the Spanish Liga Endesa last Sunday. Okoye scored 6 points and had 3 steals in 16 minutes. Okoye's stats this year are: 11.6ppg and 3.1rpg in seven games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Okoye plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #12. International forward Jordan Nwora (203-98, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Louisville in their last game. Despite his very good performance his team lost 81-92 on their home court in Louisville to the University of Tennessee. Nwora had a double-double by scoring 23 points and getting 10 rebounds in 26 minutes. Nwora has very impressive stats this year: 19.3ppg and 7.0rpg in four games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Nwora is also in the roster of the Nigerian national team.

   #13. International power forward Lotanna Nwogbo (203-93, college: Longwood, currently plays in Argentina) couldn't help Atenas (4-5) in their last game on Monday. Despite his very good performance Atenas (#4) was defeated 87-75 in General Roca by the lower-ranked Progreso (#5) in the South - South group. Nwogbo recorded a double-double by scoring 28 points and getting 11 rebounds. Nwogbo averaged so far 14.4ppg and 7.1rpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Nwogbo is also Nigerian national team player.

   #14. International center Augustine Okosun (209-86, college: Keiser, currently plays in Bulgaria) couldn't help Yambol (1-5) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Yambol was defeated 89-82 on their home court in Yambol by the higher-ranked Beroe (#4). Okosun was the top scorer with 20 points. He also added 5 rebounds. This season Okosun has very high stats. He averages: 15.2ppg, 6.0rpg and 1.2spg. Okosun holds both American and Nigerian passports. He plays currently for the Nigerian national team.

   #15. Former international forward Andy Ogide (204-87, agency: HMS, college: Colorado St., currently plays in Italy) helped UCC Piacenza win their game against the eighth-ranked Baltur Cento 79-66 in the Italian Serie A2 (second division) in Sunday night's game. Ogide was the top player that evening. He recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 14 rebounds. This season Ogide has very high stats. He averages: 15.8ppg and 6.6rpg. Ogide used to play for the Nigerian national team two years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-G/F-94, agency: Octagon Europe, currently plays in NBA) led Milwaukee Bucks to a victory over the Portland Trail Blazers (12-6) crushing them 143-100 in the NBA in Wednesday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Antetokounmpo had a double-double by scoring 33 points and getting 16 rebounds. He also added 9 assists and 3 steals in 30 minutes. The Milwaukee Bucks have a very solid 13-4 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Antetokounmpo's sixth year with the team. Antetokounmpo has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 26.3ppg, 12.9rpg, 5.8apg, 1.3bpg and 1.4spg in 16 games he played so far. Antetokounmpo has a dual citizenship: Greek and Nigerian.

   #2. Michael Ojo (216-C-93, college: Florida St., currently plays in ABA League) was the major contributor in a Crvena Zvezda's victory against one of league's weakest teams Mornar Bar (2-6) crushing them 104-71 in the ABA League last Saturday. Ojo recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 10 rebounds; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. Crvena Zvezda MTS Beograd (8-0) is placed first in the ABA League. So far his team won all eight games in the Regular Season. It's Ojo's first year with the team. This season Ojo averages: 8.0ppg and 7.0rpg. Worth to mention he played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball.

   #3. Ike Joseph Udanoh (203-PF-89, college: Wayne St., MI, currently plays in Italy) could not help MIA-RO Cantu (3-4) in their last game. Despite his very good performance MIA-RO Cantu was edged 90-87 at home by the higher-ranked (#8) VL Pesaro. Udanoh had a double-double by scoring 24 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 3 assists and 3 steals in 36 minutes. It was MIA-RO Cantu's third consecutive loss in a row. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Udanoh has relatively good stats this year: 13.9ppg, 10.1rpg, 4.3apg and 2.0spg in seven games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #4. Tonye Jekiri (213-C-94, college: Miami, FL, currently plays in Turkey) contributed to Gaziantep's victory against the closely-ranked Besiktas (3-4) 63-56 in the Turkish BSL last Sunday. Jekiri had a double-double by scoring 10 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added and 5 steals in 33 minutes. Gaziantep Basketbol (3-3) is placed fifth in the BSL. This year Jekiri's overall stats are: 9.3ppg, 9.9rpg, 1.4apg and 1.3spg in seven games.

   #5. Micheal Eric (210-C-88, college: Temple, currently plays in Euroleague) was not able to help Darussafaka (1-8) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Darussafaka was crushed 100-79 in a derby game by the much higher-ranked (#3) Fenerbahce. Eric was the top scorer with 17 points. He also added 5 rebounds and dished 3 assists in a mere 19 minutes. It was Darussafaka's seventh consecutive loss in a row. Eric has relatively good stats this year: 13.6ppg and 6.4rpg in nine games.

   #6. Michael Fakuade (201-F-89, college: Ill.-Springfield, currently plays in France) was not able to secure a victory for Entente Orleans 45 (5-1) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Fakuade's very good performance Entente Orleans 45 was defeated 94-81 on the road by the much lower-ranked C'Chartres (#13). He was the top scorer with 23 points. Fakuade also added 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists. This season Fakuade has very high stats. He averages: 16.5ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.5apg and 1.2bpg. Fakuade has both American and Nigerian nationalities.

   #7. Rasheed Sulaimon (193-G-94, college: Maryland, currently plays in France) contributed to a 2-point Levallois' victory against the 11th-ranked Monaco 89-87 in the French ProA in Saturday night's game. Sulaimon recorded 11 points in 23 minutes. This year Sulaimon's overall stats are: 8.1ppg, 3.3rpg and 3.0apg in 10 games. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Despite Sulaimon's Nigerian nationality, he previously played for the USA U19 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Nigerian team.

   #8. Mike Balogun (195-SF-91, college: Arkansas Tech, currently plays in Cyprus) was the main contributor in i's victory against the league outsider Omonia 87-76 in the Cypriot Division A on Saturday night. Balogun was the top player that evening. He scored 27 points (!!!) and grabbed 6 rebounds in 38 minutes. Balogun's stats this year are: 13.0ppg and 3.8rpg in six games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #9. Abdul-Malik Abu (203-F-95, college: NC State, currently plays in Croatia) couldn't help KK Vrijednosnice Osijek (4-3) in their last game. Despite his very good performance KK Vrijednosnice Osijek was badly defeated 89-71 in Zagreb by the second-ranked Cibona. Abu was the second best scorer with 16 points. He also added 8 rebounds in 27 minutes. Abu has very impressive stats this year: 16.0ppg, 8.4rpg and 1.6apg in seven games.

   #10. Peter Olisemeka (204-C-91, currently plays in Bulgaria) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Spartak Pleven 85-68 in the Bulgarian NBL on Saturday night. He recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 13 rebounds. Olisemeka also added 2 blocks. He averaged so far 11.7ppg, 13.5rpg, 1.3apg, 1.2bpg and 1.2spg. Olisemeka has Nigerian and Italian nationalities.

Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club of Nigeria has recorded its second win in the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone 3 Champions Cup in Cotonou, Benin. Hoopers recorded a 70-52 win over Ghana's Braves of Customs keeping its hopes of qualifying to the continental tournament alive.
