Thanasis Antetokounmpo selected the top Nigerian playing abroad in last week's games - Dec 1, 2017

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Nigerian players, who play currently abroad.


Thanasis Antetokounmpo

   #1. This week's number one is an international small forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo (199-92, currently plays in Euroleague). Antetokounmpo managed to help Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens in a 2-point victory against the seventh-ranked Real Madrid (5-5) 82-80 in the Euroleague on Friday night. He scored only 3 points in 7 minutes on the court. Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens (7-3) is placed third in the Euroleague. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. But the season just started, so everything may happen. This year Antetokounmpo averages: 4.0ppg, 2.8rpg, 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 54.5% in eight games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and Greek. Antetokounmpo played for the Nigerian senior national team one years ago.

Bryant Mbamalu

   #2. Second place goes to an international shooting guard Bryant Mbamalu (191-91, college: La-Lafayette, currently plays in Chile). He could not help Deportivo Valdivia (10-7) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Mbamalu's very good performance the third-placed Deportivo Valdivia (10-7) was edged 85-83 in a derby game by the leading Las Animas in the Conferencia Sur. He was the top scorer with 25 points. Mbamalu also added 3 assists. The Regular Season already ended. Mbamalu has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 20.8ppg, 5.9rpg, 2.1apg, 2FGP: 53.6%, 3FGP: 37.3% and FT: 73.4%. Mbamalu is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and American. He is in the roster of the Nigerian senior national team. Mbamalu used to play for Lagos Warriors in Nigerian league.

Ekpe Udoh

   #3. The Nigerian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Ekpe Udoh (208-87, college: Baylor, currently plays in NBA). He contributed to an Utah Jazz's victory against the Milwaukee Bucks (11-9) 121-108 in the NBA last Saturday. Udoh scored 7 points and added 3 assists. The Utah Jazz has 11-11 record this season. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Udoh's overall stats this season are: 2.5ppg, 2.4rpg, 1.3apg, 1.5bpg, 2FGP: 46.5%. He has both American and Nigerian nationalities. Udoh played for the Nigerian national team one years ago.

   #4. Forward Al-Farouq Aminu (206-90, college: Wake Forest, currently plays in NBA) was not able to help the Portland Trail Blazers in their game against the Milwaukee Bucks (11-9) in the NBA. He scored 6 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 22 minutes. The Portland Trail Blazers (13-9) lost 91-103 on the road to the Bucks. They ended the series of three consecutive victories. Aminu has relatively good stats this year: 9.0ppg, 7.8rpg, 1.6apg and 1.1bpg in nine games. He also holds two passports: Nigerian and American. Despite Aminu played previously for the USA U19 national team, he is currently in the Nigerian national team roster.

   #5. An experienced international power forward Ike Ofoegbu (205-84, college: SMU, currently plays in Turkey) was not able to secure a victory for Usak Sportlif (1-7) in their game against Anadolu Efes (6-2) in the Turkish BSL. Ofoegbu scored 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. The bottom-ranked Usak Sportlif was defeated 97-84 in Istanbul by the second-ranked Anadolu Efes. It was Usak Sportlif's fifth consecutive loss in a row. It's Ofoegbu's first season with the team. His overall stats this year are: 9.4ppg, 4.6rpg and 1.1apg. Ofoegbu holds both American and Nigerian passports. He used to play for the Nigerian national team last year.

   #6. Power forward Christopher Obekpa (208-93, college: UNLV, currently plays in Turkey) couldn't help Trabzonspor (3-5) in their game against Pinar Karsiyaka (2-6) in the Turkish BSL. Obekpa cannot count Thursday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and made 3 blocks in 26 minutes. Trabzonspor was edged 79-78 in Karsiyaka by the lower-ranked (#14) Pinar. This year Obekpa's overall stats are: 8.3ppg, 7.3rpg and 2.5bpg in eight games. He is a former U16 international player as he played for the Nigerian team nine years ago.

Jamal Olasewere

   #7. International small forward Jamal Olasewere (201-91, agency: HMS, college: LIU Brooklyn, currently plays in Italy) couldn't help NPC Rieti (3-6) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his good performance NPC Rieti (#13) was defeated 74-68 at home by the much higher-ranked Agrigento (#5) in the West group. Olasewere recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting the same number of rebounds. He also added 4 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). This season Olasewere has very high stats. He averages: 21.0ppg, 12.5rpg, 3.0apg and 1.5spg. Olasewere holds both American and Nigerian passports. He used to play for the Nigerian national team last year.


The list of other players, who all have Nigerian passport but never been selected to any of Nigerian national teams:

   #1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-G/F-94, agency: Octagon Europe, currently plays in NBA) led Milwaukee Bucks to a victory over the Sacramento Kings (6-15) crushing them 112-87 in the NBA in Tuesday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Antetokounmpo scored 32 points (!!!), had 5 boards, dished 5 assists and stole 5 balls in 26 minutes. The Milwaukee Bucks have 11-9 record this season. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Antetokounmpo's fifth year with the team. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Antetokounmpo averages: 29.2ppg, 10.1rpg, 4.4apg, 1.8bpg and 1.7spg in 19 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Greek and Nigerian.

   #2. Micheal Eric (210-C-88, college: Temple, currently plays in Turkey) contributed to Darussafaka's victory against the closely-ranked Eskisehir Basket (5-3) 90-83 in the Turkish BSL last Tuesday. Eric recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 15 rebounds. Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul (5-3) is placed fifth in the BSL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. It's Eric's first season with the team. This year he averages: 8.5ppg and 4.9rpg.

   #3. Francesco Ihedioha (196-F-86, also represented by Octagon Europe, currently plays in Italy) could not help Aurira Jesi (6-3) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Aurira Jesi (#4) was edged 72-71 at home by the much lower-ranked (#11) Dinamica MNV in the East group. Ihedioha was the top scorer with 20 points. He also added 8 rebounds and made 3 blocks in 34 minutes. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Ihedioha has relatively good stats this year: 10.1ppg, 6.4rpg and 1.4spg in nine games. He is another player who holds two passports: Nigerian and Italian.

   #4. Semi Ojeleye (201-F-94, college: SMU, currently plays in NBA) contributed to an easy victory against the Orlando Magic (9-13) 118-103 in the NBA on Friday night. Ojeleye scored 7 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. The Boston Celtics have a very good 19-4 record this season. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. It's Ojeleye's first year with the team. His overall stats this season are: 2.7ppg and 2.0rpg. Ojeleye has both American and Nigerian nationalities.

   #5. Nnanna Egwu (211-F/C-92, college: Illinois, currently plays in Australia) was not able to help Cairns Taipans (5-7) in their last game. Despite his good performance Cairns Taipans lost 72-81 on the road to the league outsider (#8) Kings. Egwu scored 11 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 28 minutes. It's Egwu's first season with the team. This year his overall stats are: 5.2ppg, 4.4rpg and 2.2apg in 12 games. Egwu also holds two passports: Nigerian and American.

   #6. Caleb Agada (193-G-94, agency: Blacktop Management, college: Ottawa, currently plays in Spain) was the main contributor in a CB Prat's victory against the seventh-ranked Araberri 85-67 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Saturday night's game. Agada was MVP of the game. He recorded 22 points, 5 assists and 3 steals. This season Agada has very high stats. He averages: 17.7ppg, 4.2rpg, 3.1apg and 3.0spg. Agada has dual citizenship: Canadian and Nigerian. Despite his Nigerian passport, Agada previously played for the Canadian university national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Nigerian team.

   #7. Augustine Okosun (210-C-86, college: Keiser, currently plays in Chile) was not able to secure a victory for Universidad de Concepcion in their game against Puente Alto in the Chilean Liga Nacional. He scored 9 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 24 minutes. His team was edged 68-66. Okosun has very impressive stats this year: 17.7ppg, 4.2rpg, 3.1apg and 3.0spg in 11 games. He holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #8. Marcus Williams (201-G/F-94, college: Mich.-Dearborn, currently plays in Alpe-Adria-Cup) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Tajfun in their game against BK Decin in the Alpe Adria Cup, despite his good performance in Friday night's game. Williams scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 23 minutes. But his team lost 81-87. This year he has relatively solid stats: 13.0ppg, 6.7rpg and 1.3spg in three games. Williams holds both American and Nigerian passports.

   #9. Stephen Domingo (201-G-95, college: California, currently plays in Holland) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Leeuwarden crushing them 112-65 in the Dutch Eredivisie last Thursday. He scored 7 points. Domingo's overall stats this season are: 9.0ppg and 4.6rpg. He holds both American and Nigerian passports. Despite Domingo's Nigerian nationality, he previously played for the USA U17 national team and probably cannot be called to the Nigerian team.

   #10. David Kadiri (203-F-95, college: Buffalo, currently plays in United Kingdom) couldn't help Manchester Giants in their game against Bristol Acadamy Flyers in the British BBL. Despite his very good performance in Sunday night's game Kadiri recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 12 rebounds. He also added 3 assists. This season Kadiri has very high stats. He averages: 17.4ppg, 9.4rpg and 1.9apg. Kadiri holds both American and Nigerian passports.

MICHEAL ERIC Unicaja Malaga (Liga Endesa) are targeting 30-year old Nigerian center Micheal Eric (210-109kg-88, college: Temple) who played last time at Darussafaka Istanbul in Turkey. In 31 BSL games he recorded 9.3ppg and 5.9rpg last season. He helped them to make it to the Turkish Cup Semifinals. Eric also played 22 games in Eurocup where he averaged 7.7ppg and 5.7rpg. Kangoeroes Basket Willebroek (Euromillions League) landed 24-year old American (has also Nigerian passport) forward TK Edogi (203-103kg-94). He just graduated from Iona (NCAA). In 33 games he averaged 8.8ppg, 7.2rpg and 1.2bpg last season. Edogi helped them to win MAAC Tournament. The previous (16-17) season he played at The University of Tulsa in NCAA in the NCAA where in 31 games he had 4.4ppg and 3.7rpg. Pallacanestro Crema (Serie B) landed 19-year old naturalized Nigerian power forward Emmanuel Enihe (198-98, agency: Players Group). He played most recently at Allmag PMS Moncalieri. In 31 Serie B games he averaged 9.5ppg, 6.6rpg, 1.1apg and 1.4spg last season.
