NBBF Division II Basketball League witness greatest turnout - Nov 18, 2016
he NBBF's Division II Basketball League has come to an end. The 7-Day basketball league was held at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with 14 teams in attendance, the highest in Nigerian History. With the limited time made available, teams had to play twice in a day, to complete the round robin fixtures. Seven teams on both Atlantic and Savannah conferences stood to compete amongst themselves, in the quest to qualify for the Division I Basketball League. From the Atlantic Conference, the Impression Basketball Academy, Delta State led by Kenneth Mfon had a good run, winning all their matches except at the finals. Raptors Basketball Academy led by Charles Ibeziakor won all but came up short against Impression at the group stage. Both teams automatically qualified for semifinals. Moving on to Savannah Conference, Jewel Bulls of Gombe State led by Yakubu Kabiru came up tops at the group stage, followed by Pearls Basketball Academy which was led by Spencer Chileh. Top two teams from Savannah and Atlantic Conference faced each other at the semifinals with the best from each conference squaring it out and second best the battle of the best losers. Team Raptors first won the third place title, as they defeated Pearls Basketball Academy with a slender lead of four points. Final Scores: Raptors (56) Pearls (52) Team Impression lost the match that mattered the most to Savannah Conference's Jewels Bulls. The Bulls ran the opponent over and kept the score difference at bay till the end of blow of the final buzzer. Jewels Bulls won Impression with a difference of 10 points. Final Scores: Impression (74) Jewels Bulls (84). Next stage of the event took place as medals and awards were presented to individuals and teams. Pastor Skambo Morrison, MC of the finals ensured the presentation went well. Special guests such as winner of the Nigerian Men's Basketball League and FIBA Africa Zone 3 champion, head coach of Kano Pillars, Mallam Sani Ahmed came to grace the event with his presence. Mallam Sani presented the championship trophy to Jewels Bulls. Alhaji Kawu, general secretary of Nigerian Basketball Referees presented the awards to the Top Five players of the tournament. Coordinator of the tournament, Mr. Ajirabade Bello, was pleased over the turnout of teams and he said it was overwhelming and knows that the path with which the game is going is on a good one.
