AfroBasket 2023: Cameroon outlast Mozambique in the opener

Cameroon - Mozambique 55-53

Cameroon opened win count at the 2023 AfroBasket. They overcame Mozambique in a thrilling battle in Kigali. Monique Akoa (180-G-2001) sank a three-pointer with less than 10 seconds remaining to propel Cameroon to the win.
Cameroon posted a 16-12 lead after ten minutes. They maintained the advantage throughout the second term. Cameroon recorded a 32-26 halftime lead. Mozambique narrowed the gap in the third term. They eventually denied the deficit as Odelia Mafanela (181-F-1989) gave Mozambique a 53-51 lead with 44 seconds remaining. But Monique Akoa sank a decisive triple late in regulation and Cameroon got away with the victory. Carine Silatsa (186-F-1998) accounted for 13 points, while Monique Akoa and Jessica Thomas (168-G-1994, college: Miami, FL) delivered 12 points each for the winners. Odelia Mafanela answered with 18 points for Mozambique.
