Navetanes Tournament - Dec 14, 2004

The Navetanes tournament which was enclosed last week was a great success: Not only it made it possible to the basketball family to see each other every evening, but also to think of helping the Mauritanian Federation of Basketball. 

Organized by the Old International ones, it was its first edition.  During more than one month, eight teams eight teams played out the winner  and it was the team of Sebkha that won in the end after loosing only one of eight games.The team of Ilot L managed to win six games to gain the 2nd place, while the team of the Outsiders had also six wins to be placed third.The Veterans who were the attraction of the tournament came in at the fourth place.  Ablaye Ly, Diole, Hacen, Kaba had physical problems, still the fans supported them well.The teams of P.S BasketballClub and Teyarett were classified 5th and 6th respectively,while theother two teams withdrew themselves before the end of the tournament. The tournament gave the opportunity to discuss alot about basketball in Mauretania. The leaders of the clubs, the coaches who are practicing the majority of the teams had honest discussions projected on the future. "The next year,we nedd the assistance of the Federation, we must assemble competitive teams in all the categories“, says one of them.The President of the Steering Committee, M.Tandja Idrissa, is optimistic on actions to be taken for the next tournament:  "The tournament which started in period of Ramadan made it possible to the public to follow its favorite sport.  It also made it possible to measure how much people like this sport ".  According to him, the tournament will be maintained in its current form for the next year with some installations on the level of the conditions of participation.  "In the next year, we will limit the number of young people per team not to handicap the old ones".  Abalaye Ly, the former captain and leader of the national team of basketball during several years remains always a model for them. The teaching-side shows the other facet of the tournament which consists in giving desire to the young people for practising basketball. It is also the mission of the former basketball players who want to give their keys to success to their successors.


Mauritania in top gear for Zone II basketball tournament - 9 Years ago
Mauritania is preparing for the Zone II basketball tournament of the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa, to be held from 15 to 20 May in the Malian capital, Bamako. Coaching duo Abdoulaye Ly and Abdoul Ba have pre-selected 20 players for the event, which groups hosts Mali, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania and Senegal. Mauretanian veteran off to France - 13 Years ago
Mauretanian forward Mamadou 'Papp' Sarr (202-F) signed with Joeuf Homecourt Basket in France (N2) after playing many years in Mauretania and in Morocco (FUS Rabat). The 38 year old veteran should help Joeuf to solve their frontcourt problems.    [read more]
International tournament from the 20th unitl the 26th of August in Noukachott - 13 Years ago
The internaional tournament organized by the Mauretanian Basketball Federation gathered teams from Gambia and Senegal and from the hosts Mauretania. The tournament should prepare the Mauretanian national team for a zonal tournament slated for September in Gambia.   [read more]
