We bring you last week's top performances from Malians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Cheick Diallo

   #1. This week's number one is former U16 international power forward Cheick Diallo (206-96, college: Kansas, currently plays in NBA). He led New Orleans Pelicans to a victory against the Chicago Bulls (12-42) 125-120 in the NBA in Wednesday night's game. Diallo recorded 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 23 minutes on the court; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. The New Orleans Pelicans have 24-31 record this season. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. This year Diallo averages: 4.6ppg, 3.9rpg, 2FGP: 61.2%(71-116) and FT: 70.7% in 37 games he played so far. He played for the Mali U16 national team eight years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Nianta Diarra (203-93, currently plays in France). He could not help Boulazac Basket (10-9) to beat JL Bourg (16-3). Diarra recorded only 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 15 minutes. Boulazac Basket was badly defeated 93-75 on the road by the higher-ranked (#3) JL Bourg. They ended the series of three consecutive victories. This year Diarra's overall stats are: 4.1ppg, 3.2rpg, 2FGP: 59.5%(25-42), 3FGP: 27.8% and FT: 54.2% in 19 games. He has a dual citizenship: Mali and French. Diarra is in the roster of the Mali senior national team.

Drissa Ballo

   #3. The Mali player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Drissa Ballo (208-95, currently plays in France). He contributed to an ALM Evreux's victory against the closely-ranked Quimper UJAP (6-10) 73-68 in the French ProB (second division) last Saturday. Ballo scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 22 minutes. ALM Evreux Basket (7-10) is placed 13th in the ProB. It was his team's first victory after six consecutive loses. This year Ballo's total stats are: 3.8ppg, 4.0rpg, 2FGP: 54.5% and FT: 33.3% in four games. He is also a member of the Mali senior national team.

   #4. An experienced guard Ludovic Chelle (188-83, currently plays in France) was the major contributor in a Saint Vallier's victory against the 11th-ranked Recy Saint-Martin (7-15) 88-78 in the French NM1 (third division) in Saturday night's game. He recorded 15 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in 26 minutes. Saint Vallier Basket Drome (13-8) is placed fifth in Group A. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Chelle's first season with the team. Chelle has averaged so far 8.6ppg, 2.1rpg, 1.6apg and 1.2spg in 18 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Mali and French. Despite Chelle played previously for the French U20 national team, he is currently in the Mali national team roster.

Soumaoro recorded only 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in Group A. Saint-Quentin Basket-Ball (21-1) is placed first. It was his team's tenth consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Soumaoro has averaged so far 7.2ppg and 4.5rpg. He plays currently for the Mali national team.

Point guard Ibrahima Sidibe (180-95, currently plays in France) contributed to an GET Vosges' surprising victory against the sixth-ranked Sorgues BC (11-11) 83-66 in the French NM1 (third division) last Saturday. He recorded 7 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists in 21 minutes. Golbey Epinal Thaon Vosges (6-16) is placed 13th in Group A. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Sidibe has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 17.3ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.1apg and 1.3spg in seven games. Despite Sidibe played previously for the French U20 national team, he is also an international player who is currently on the senior Mali National Team roster.

Balayera contributed to an GET Vosges' shocking victory against the sixth-ranked Sorgues BC (11-11) 83-66. He recorded 12 points. Balayera has averaged so far 6.7ppg and 1.3rpg. He is also Mali national team player.

Shooting guard Mahamadou Drame (188-86, currently plays in France) contributed to a Feurs EF's victory against the 12th-ranked ALS Basket (6-15) 85-77 in the French NM1 (third division) in Saturday night's game. Samake has averaged so far 4.6ppg and 4.9rpg. He used to play for the Mali national team two years ago.

He played also in the last French NM1 game facing Samba Balayera (above) in the other team. Boundy helped GET Vosges win their game against the sixth-ranked Sorgues BC (11-11) 83-66. He recorded 7 points in 15 minutes. Boundy has averaged so far 8.8ppg, 2.9rpg, 1.5apg and 1.2spg in 22 games. He is a former international player as four years ago he still played for the Mali senior national team.

Bandja Sy (204-F-90, agency: BeoBasket, college: N.Mexico St., currently plays in ABA League) managed to help BC Partizan NiS Beograd to win against the eighth-ranked Cibona (7-11) crushing them 83-59 in the ABA League last Saturday. Sy scored 5 points. BC Partizan NiS Beograd (12-6) is placed fourth in the ABA League. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the ABA League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Sy's first season with the team. His overall stats this year are: 7.2ppg, 3.2rpg and 1.2apg. Sy has a dual citizenship: Mali and French.

   #2. Amadou Sow (206-F-98, currently plays college basketball in the States) led UCSB to an easy victory against the University of Hawaii (1-2) crushing them 75-54 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 11 rebounds. The Univ. of California-Santa Barbara has 3-0 conference record this season. So far his team won all three games in the conference. Sow has relatively good stats this season: 11.2ppg and 6.6rpg.

   #3. Mambi Diawara (193-G-94, college: Lamar St.CC, currently plays in Canada) was the major contributor in an University of Calgary's victory against the Wolfpack (6-13) crushing them 91-59 in the U Sports on Saturday night. Diawara recorded 19 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. The University of Calgary has a very solid 18-1 record this season. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. The Regular Season already ended. Diawara has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 18.4ppg, 6.1rpg, 3.5apg and 2.2spg. Diawara is another player who holds two passports: Mali and Canadian.

   #4. Tahirou Diabate (206-F-98, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Portland (0-5) to beat the Santa Clara University (2-5). Diabate recorded 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 16 minutes. his team lost 63-69 at home to the University. So far Portland lost all five games in the conference Diabate has averaged so far 5.5ppg and 3.5rpg in 24 games he played so far.

   #5. Nouhoum Bocoum (207-F/C-92, college: Arkansas St., currently plays in Spain) was not able to help Aridane (6-11) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance the 13th-placed Aridane (6-11) was defeated 90-83 on their home court in Los Llanos by the much higher-ranked Alcobendas (#3) in the Group B. Bocoum was the top scorer with 17 points. He also added 6 rebounds. This season Bocoum has very high stats. He averages: 16.4ppg, 9.6rpg and 1.8apg. Bocoum has both American and Mali nationalities.

   #6. Thimothee Troussel (203-F-95, college: MSU-West Plains, currently plays in NCAA2) contributed to a 2-point Newman University's victory against the Oklahoma Christian University 79-77 in the NCAA2 in Saturday night's game. Troussel recorded only 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Troussel has averaged so far 4.2ppg, 2.9rpg and 1.1apg. He also holds two passports: Mali and French.

Cote d'Ivoire - Mali 69:49 Cote d'Ivoire qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 2010. They beat Mali in Treichville to secure the qualification. Souleyman Diabate (181-PG-87) posted 16 points to lead the winners. Cote d'Ivoire grabbed a 26:15 lead after the opening frame. They boosted the margin in the second period.
