We bring you last week's top performances from Malians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Amara Sy

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international forward Amara Sy (202-81, agency: BeoBasket, currently plays in France). He contributed to an easy victory against the seventh-ranked Gravelines-Dunkerque (14-11) crushing them 92-72 in the French ProA in Saturday night's game. Sy recorded 6 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and made 3 blocks in 27 minutes on the court. AS Monaco Basket (22-3) is placed first in the ProA. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Sy averages: 7.7ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.5apg, 2FGP: 56.0%(70-125), 3FGP: 14.3% and FT: 74.1% in 25 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Mali and French. Sy played for the Mali senior national team six years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to former international swingman Sourata Cisse (196-86, currently plays in France). Cisse led Orchesien BC to a 1-point victory over the 15th-ranked Lorient (13-18) 86-85 in the French NM1 (third division) on Saturday night. He was MVP of the game. Cisse recorded 28 points (!!!) and added 4 assists in 37 minutes. BC Orchies (18-13) is placed sixth in the NM1. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Cisse has relatively good stats this year: 13.1ppg, 3.7rpg, 1.8apg, 2FGP: 51.9%, 3FGP: 42.3% and FT: 78.3% in 31 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Mali and French. Despite Cisse played previously for the French U20 national team, he played also for the Mali national team in 2015.

Boubacar Sidibe

   #3. The Mali player who performed third best last week abroad was former international center Boubacar Sidibe (205-94, currently plays in Spain). Sidibe could not help Blancos de Rueda (14-13) to beat Albacete (7-20). He scored only 4 points and blocked 2 blocks in 12 minutes. Blancos de Rueda was edged 75-73 on the road by the one of league's weakest teams (#15) Albacete. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Sidibe's overall stats are: 5.5ppg, 5.1rpg, 1.3bpg, 2FGP: 47.6%, 3FGP: 21.4% and FT: 39.1% in 21 games. He played for the Mali national team two years ago.

Sambou Traore

   #4. Power forward Sambou Traore (198-79, currently plays in France) was not able to help Chorale de Roanne in their game against Poitiers (14-12) in the French ProB (second division). Traore did not beat the league record on Friday evening. He recorded only 2 points. Chorale de Roanne was badly defeated 85-68 on the opponent's court by the higher-ranked Poitiers (#8). Traore's total stats this season are: 1.8ppg and 1.2rpg. He has both Mali and French nationalities. Traore used to play for the Mali national team back in 2015.

   #5. Former international point guard Ibrahim Saounera (179-87, currently plays in France) was not able to secure a victory for Vendee Challans (16-15) in their last game. Despite his good performance Vendee Challans lost 86-92 on the opponent's court to the leading Caen. Saounera recorded 13 points and added 6 assists in 43 minutes. They ended the series of five consecutive victories. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. This year Saounera has relatively solid stats: 12.2ppg, 3.1rpg, 3.7apg and 1.4spg in 31 games. He also holds two passports: Mali and French. Saounera used to play for the Mali national team two years ago.

   #6. Power forward Cheick Soumaoro (204-90, currently plays in France) couldn't help SAP Vaucluse (13-18) in their game against GET Vosges (18-13) in the French NM1 (third division). He recorded 5 points. SAP Vaucluse was badly defeated 68-51 in Golbey by the much higher-ranked GET Vosges (#4). There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be extremely important. Soumaoro's total stats this season are: 8.7ppg and 5.7rpg. He is a former international player as he played for the Mali senior team six years ago.

   #7. Former international point guard Ludovic Chelle (183-83, currently plays in France) faced previously mentioned Ibrahim Saounera in the French NM1 last game. Chelle contributed to Caen's victory against the eighth-ranked Vendee Challans (16-15) 92-86. He recorded 8 points in 24 minutes. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. This year Chelle's total stats are: 8.4ppg, 2.2rpg and 2.1apg in 30 games. Despite he played previously for the French U20 national team, Chelle is currently in the Mali national team roster.

Bandja Sy (204-F-90, agency: BeoBasket, college: N.Mexico St., currently plays in France) contributed to an ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket's victory against the 14th-ranked Hyeres-Toulon (9-16) 73-59 in the French ProA last Monday. He recorded 10 points. ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket (13-12) is placed eighth in the ProA. Sy's overall stats this season are: 7.0ppg and 3.4rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Mali and French.

   #2. Nianta Diarra (205-F/C-93, currently plays in France). Diarra could not help Olympique Antibes (7-18) to beat Chalon/Saor (18-7). He recorded 5 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Olympique Antibes was defeated 87-74 on the road by the second-ranked Chalon/Saor. It was Olympique Antibes' fifth consecutive loss in a row. Diarra's overall stats this season are: 2.8ppg and 3.1rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Mali and French.

IBRAHIM SAOUNERA CEP Lorient (NM1) agreed terms with 31-year old Mali ex-international point guard Ibrahim Saounera (179-80kg-87). He has played for the last three seasons at Vendee Challans Basket. In 25 NM1 games he had 11.1ppg, 2.7rpg, 5.4apg and 1.2spg last season. Saounera won French NM2 Group B championship title in 2011. USFAS and Stade share the top - 11 days ago
USFAS and Stade share the top with 10-3 records. Stade overcame Jeanne D'Arc 81-62 in their latest game played on June 3rd to catch up with USFAS. The latter lost to CRB 56-61. CRB won the first period 12-11 and led 30-18 at the halftime. AS Police is third with a 9-4 record. They lost to AS Sigui 81-85 as the latter improved to a 6-7 record.   [read more]

LUDOVIC CHELLE Saint Vallier Basket Drome (NM1) inked experienced 35-year old naturalized Malian guard Ludovic Chelle (183-83). He has played for the last two years at played at Caen Basket Calvados in the ProB. In 24 games he averaged 8.6ppg, 1.4rpg and 2.0apg last season.
