Basketball Association president elected

MZUZU, OCTOBER 4, MANA -Oscar Kanjala Saturday was elected as president of Basketball Association of Malawi (BASMAL) unopposed at annual general meeting (AGM) held at Katoto Secondary School Hall in Mzuzu.

There was joy glee by voters when the electoral body conducting the elections mentioned Kanjala's candidature. Kanjala who was previously the association's vice president won the presidency unopposed.

Vice presidency went to Jacob Chikoya who had 24 votes against his contender Brian who had one vote, on the position of Secretary general Roy Kachale beat Ben with 24 votes against 3, Daudi Suleman was elected vice to Kachale while George Phiri won the position of treasurer general unopposed and Frank Kapesa, Madano Tepetheya and Mayamiko Chilongozi were elected as committee members.

In his acceptance speech, the just elected BASMAL president, Oscar Kanjala said he is facing a big challenge because to be a leader is not easy.

“I am very delighted to be elected as BASMAL President for the next four years. You voting for me is a great manifestation that you have trust in me, and I promise to deliver positively towards development of basketball in the country,” said Kanjala.

He then appealed to the newly elected executive and all basketball stakeholders in the country to work hand in hand for the goodness of the sport.

The elections, which were conducted by the Malawi National Council of Sports, attracted participants from the Southern (SOZOBAL), Central (CEZOBAL) and Northern (NOZOBAL) basketball zones.
