Defending champion Al Ahly Tripoli (D1) landed experienced 36-year old Cape Verdean-Portuguese 197cm small forward Ivan Almeida (college: Stonehill). It is actually his comeback to Tripoli as he has played here before. Almeida played most recently at Kriol Star in Cape Verdean Praia League. He also played for Juvi Cremona (Serie A) in Italian league. The other team he played shortly was Happy Casa Brindisi (Serie A) in Italian league.
Almeida is a very experienced player. And here thanks to pro basketball he experienced life in nine different countries playing on three different continents. He is familiar with European, African and of course North American leagues. Almeida has played previously professionally in France (Cholet Basket, Chorale de Roanne and Lille), Israel (Ironi Nahariya), Latvia, Poland (Anwil), Portugal (Benfica, Vitoria SC/Costa Guerreiro Lda. and Galitos-Barreiro), Estonia (Kalev/Cramo), Czech Republic (Nymburk), Italy (Treviso) and The Basketball Tournament (The Cru). He won Portuguese League championship title in 2022, 2023 and 2024 and the Supercup in 2006 and 2024. Almeida was voted to Eurobasket.com Portuguese League All-Domestic Players Team in 2013, 2022 and 2023.
He is close to retirement age as a player. It may be one of last seasons in his extensive career, which he may end at Al Ahly Tripoli.
He graduated from Stonehill College in 2012 and it will be his 14th (!!!) season in pro basketball. He played also for Mohawk Valley Community College for one year.
